Dual Layer Blu-ray? Better Late Than Never

The web-rumor mill is full steam with anticipation of an announcement today from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Apparently Sony has finally accomplished dual layering on its Blu-ray disk format. Dual layer is what will give a single Blu-ray disk a full 50Gigs of storage. So far that feat has been just outside the reach of Sony as the format has lagged behind competitor HD DVD which already has 30Gig dual layer disks. Films released on Blu-ray so far have had to be satisfied with only 25Gigs which some say has contributed to Blu-ray not being as visually appealing as its competitor HD DVD. So, it looks like the real format war between the next generation optical disk formats will begin in earnest. But is it too late for Sony’s Blu-ray?
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release the first volley of Blu-ray over the next three months with one film per month. October 10th is the expected date of Click and on December 10th Blu-ray viewers will have the opportunity to marvel at the high definition antics of Will Farrell in Talladega Nights. The truly notable release will be on November 14th with Black Hawk Down which will feature Blu-ray’s proprietary “Blu-Wizard” features. Blu-Wizard features will provide November’s Black Hawk Down release with hi-def interactive features to truly let the BD format show off what it can do.
