The Finish subwoofer tests are a highly detailed battery of tests using sophisticated equipment to obtain performance measurements on various subwoofers. The tests are an example of guerilla hardware reviewing that only knowing your way around the online Home Theater community can offer. Testing has been performed on some high profile names like Hsu Research, Axiom and SVS. There are even some DIY subs getting the Finnish test treatment.
They’re performed by Ilkka who’s been doing these tests for years. Due to the completely unbiased nature and lack of kindness toward advertisers the test had a difficult time finding a long term place on the web. The newest home for Ilkka’s subwoofer testing is at the Home Theater Shack. Sonnie, webmaster of the ‘Shack is determined they’ll stay.
Ilkka posts complete details of the analysis he performs on all equipment here and is very open to answering questions about the tests and giving feedback to readers. If you don’t see your sub tested on the Shack you’ll find a stockpile of older subwoofer test on the AVTalk forum.
Each Finnish Subwoofer test includes charts you can download for frequency response, THD and Output levels that graphically illustrate comparisons to other subs you might consider. There are even pictures of actual testing in progress. The tests are a very thorough exercise and obviously a passion for Ilkka. No manufacturer’s advertising is accepted from Ilkka to perform his tests and testing methodologies are well documented on the pages of the Home Theater Shack’s Subwoofer Test forum. Even if you’ve only got a passing interest in how well your sub might measure in clinical testing the pages within the testing forum are a terrific example of an online community keeping the industry honest.
