Reed Hastings CEO of Netflix wants the movie studios to support both HD-DVD & Blu-ray and I couldn’t agree more. Mr. Hastings stated new window in a recent earnings conference-call “the studios should release their movie libraries on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray to make consumers feel comfortable enough to upgrade from standard DVD”. The question here is will the studios listen?
My fear is that dubious shoppers may shy away from both formats when they realize there are certain studios that have backed one format exclusively. For example, if you’re all excited about seeing ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ or ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ (Universal) on Blu-ray you’re out of luck and vice-versa if you’re looking forward to buying that James Bond collection (Sony-MGM) on HD-DVD I wouldn’t hold your breath.
I feel the formats themselves should decide the winner and not the available content. Consumers shouldn’t have any roadblocks in deciding which format to go with, as doing so will only prolong the format war and ultimately stifle the available hi-def DVD content from the studios.
