DirecTV's ambitious HD plan

Last week I mentioned the 14 markets that recently received HD locals from DirecTV. Today I ran across an article from Digital TV Group new window that paints a clearer picture (massive pun) as to DirecTV’s HD plans, for the year ahead.

Chase Carey, DirecTV’s CEO indicated: High-Definition programming would "play an increasingly important role in DirecTV's competitive strength and future growth".

Carey went on to state that: DirecTV’s local HD channels include coverage to 20 markets, representing about 40% of US TV households and “by the end of the year, we expect to have HD local channels available to approximately three-quarters of all households.”

It was Carey’s last comment that struck me as the most ambitious. “After the launch of our two remaining HD satellites next year, we expect to have the most comprehensive and compelling offering of HD programming for nearly every home in America.”

I suppose detractors would press Mr. Carey for a clear definition of exactly what “nearly every home” means.
