More Blu-ray delays

This morning (or yesterday if you factor in the time difference) Pioneer announced their decision to delay the North American launch of Pioneer branded Blu-ray products, until the “autumn” yes autumn that’s not a typo.

Although the announcement doesn’t exactly come as a surprise, (many had speculated as much) the statement this morning from Pioneer was the first official word of the delay.

As recently as several weeks ago, Pioneer had made mention of still being on track for a June release, although some sources had predicted the player would launch back in May, based on early word from the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show.

With a suggested retail of $1500 to $1800 one has to wonder what if any significant impact Pioneer’s now delayed BDP-HD1 Blu-ray player, would have had in the overall success of Blu-ray’s launch. However it appears as if Pioneer might not be the only Blu-ray partner to delay launch.

Apparently Crutchfield originally indicated the Samsung BD-P1000 would be available on or around June 23rd. A quick check of the “Pre-order yours today” link on the BD-P1000 product page, now lists the in-stock date as July 28th.
