Question 7.1 Rear Surrounds?

Hey Shacksters,

Just playing around with my new Yamaha 1800 AVR, but can't get Blu-ray or HD-DVD to play anything through the rear surrounds.

Am I missing something stupid?!

I've read the manual and don't have them set to bi-amp.

BTW, when I play a cd (through my Samsung BD) it outputs all 7 channels, so I don't get what's happening with the rear surrounds when playing surround-encoded material.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Phil

Now about that projector...

Re: 7.1 Rear Surrounds?

What movies have you tried?

Mainly you need to matrix the 5.1 channel into 7.1. Usually by turning on the PLIIXxMOVIE (or something like that) mode on the receiver.

Ditto. A reason why I encourage people to build a nice 3.1, then 5.1 setup before heading to 7.1. There are very few movies with discrete 7.1, most are just 5.1 that you have to create information for to back 2 channels.

Listen to the Real HT Info Podcast at http://realht.info, or on iTunes.

Also, listen right here on The Home Theater Shack. Just use the web applet on the front page.

I agree, in my experience, there are many more discrete 6.1 movies out there than 7.1. It led to my decision to purchase 3 surrounds. I figure if I want to move up to 7.1, I can bi-wire my dipole/bipole middle back surround for 2 separate channels (or something similar, depending on the room I end up in).

Re: 7.1 Rear Surrounds?

That's the thing from keeping me from upgrading from my 6.1 system to a 7.1 system, although I'm currently only running 5.1. Having the "discrete" 6.1 is nice, but I'd like to see more movies in 6.1 let-alone 7.1. Just look at that new Yamaha receiver with the 11.2 is it? When are we going to see movies that would even handle close to that. I just don't want to have speakers sitting there on my wall doing nothing and playing nothing. When more 7.1 movies come out, I'm sure a lot of people are going to jump on them, but until then, a lot of us are happy with 5 or 6.1 systems.

Yep, my speakers look movie theatre-esque so I don't mind their appearance and I use all 6 for music pretty frequently. But I must say I don't feel like 7.1 would add a lot to my system that I don't get from 6.1 but I could be wrong. I can say that I would be even happier if I had that pc-13 ultra like you!

Re: 7.1 Rear Surrounds?

I'd love to have the extra speakers sitting there as well, so if you can afford it, why not!

The PC13-U totally opened up my system. All of the LFE came off of the mains and now I can turn my system up really loud without the bass distortion that I had with my old Bose 701's.

I've had my m80's for only 5 days now and I have kids, so I haven't had a chance to play with them yet. At the volumes I listen to now, I'm going to be VERY happy when I can turn it up to Reference levels.
