All Regions DVD Player advise needed.

I just made the plunge and ordered the "Laurel and Hardy" 21 DVD
boxset from England which contains most of their Hal Roach sound
features and shorts. It cost $110 when US dollars are converted to
Euros via [url]www.amazon.co.uk.com

The reason I got it is because Hallmark (the greeting card company)
has purchased the domestic rights to their films and the quality
of their materials isn't good. Apparently, they have much better
(sharper, finer grain, superior contrast) negatives of their films
in England and Laurel and Hardy fans told me I should get the
box set if I wanted the best versions on DVD.

Of course the problem is they're in the PAL format so I need to
buy an all regions DVD player.

I found one which seems appropriate which is

Philips DVP5982

on ebay for $78.99.

It has an HDMI output with 1080p HD-Upconversion so I can
hood it up to my Optoma HD 70 DLP. It plays PAL and NTSC
regions.

Has anyone had any experience with the unit or any problems
playing foreign DVDs? Does anyone have any other recommendations
for other all regions players? Any advice would be appreciated.

I'll review the PAL import after I screen it. I also plan on ordering
some other PAL DVDs from a company on ebay that has them in
the states already for sale. A bit more than standard DVDs (about
$5 extra) but there are some titles that were never released here
including "The Anderson Tapes" and "Blood on Satan's Claw"
that I'd like to see.

I've seen PAL television while I was in China and I didn't notice
any flickering although supposedly that is a problem with the format.
It should be interesting to see if there are any artifacts or distortion
when converting from PAL to NTSC and projecting the image.

Oppo's get a lot of noise for being the best DVD players out there. I think the 981HD is supposed to be both PAL and NTSC compatable. A little bit more than the one you're looking at, but supposedly better.

Re: All Regions DVD Player advise needed.

Hi There,
I am originally from the U.K but work brought me here to Mexico, which also uses the NTSC video standard, I am using an L.G multi region dvd player and a panny 900 projector, I brought all my dvd collection with me (PAL) and have not noticed any problems.

hope this helps,
Regards
Andrew.
