Question about power amplifier

Hi,

I have a simple question, for example if i need 150W power to drive my speakers in real usage and my AVR is capable of delivering only 100W and if add extra 100W power amplifier , would it give 150W power or only power from the power amplifier will be used?. or i have now 200W in total?

Thanks

Re: Question about power amplifier

You would be bypassing the receivers amplification so you would only have what the external amp outputs (you can't use both at the same time)

Home theater:
Onkyo 805, Yamaha YDP2006EQ, Samson Servo 600 amp
3 EV Sentry 500 monitors across the front, 4 Mission 762i's Surrounds, SVS PB13U sub, Panasonic BDT220, Harmony 1100, Nintendo WiiU
Panasonic PT-AE8000 on a 120" 2,35:1 fixed screen

Living room system:
Sherwood/Newcastle R972, Mission 765's, SVS SBS02's, A/D/S MS3u sub, Yamaha YDG2030EQ
Yamaha KX-393 Tape deck, CDC 805 CD changer, Panasonic BD60, Sony turntable PS-T20
Panasonic TC-P50ST60, HD-PVR & WDTV Live, Harmony 900

Re: Question about power amplifier

thanks for the answer, is there anyway we could use both ? ..so there is no use to buy a high end AVR when you have a power amplifier other than decoding and eq?

Re: Question about power amplifier

Well, only the mid to high end receivers have pre outputs to use external amps so that is a must. You can't hook up the receivers speaker outputs to the input of another amp. You can only use low level line outputs known as pre outs.

Onkyo 805, Yamaha YDP2006EQ, Samson Servo 600 amp
3 EV Sentry 500 monitors across the front, 4 Mission 762i's Surrounds, SVS PB13U sub, Panasonic BDT220, Harmony 1100, Nintendo WiiU

You canít connect two amplifiers to the same speaker. Itís a good way to blow two amplifiers.

Re: Question about power amplifier

is it really worth to get a power amplifier like Emotiva XPA-7 (gen 3) for 7.1 system or just get XPA-3 (gen 3) and BasX 500 for remaining surround and Atmos channels?
