Class D Audio amplifiers

I was wondering if anyone here has considered building an amplifier from Class D Audio. http://classdaudio.com/index.php/

I'm considering a kit for a 500W X 2 into 4 Ohm solution. I'd get one that allows soldering in the inputs, power and speaker terminals, as well as the larger heat sink. I already have wire, RCA jacks, LEDs, power switch and power cord that would work. I'd get a vented project box to house it.

The buzz on diyaudio and audio circle seems positive. The only problem I see so far is the incomplete and conflicting product info they have. I've emailed them for clarification before I buy.

Hello,
I look forward to reading findings. I personally am a Class A or Class A/B with a high Class A bias Amplifier fan. I am interested in getting a tube amplifier however.

Class D amps definitely have some major advantages. The efficiency and cool operation are major pluses.
Cheers,
JJ

You'll need to also build an adequate power supply, plus I recommend looking into including a soft start switch to minimize speaker thump at turn on.

I just got an email back from Tom at Class D Audio and he says the amp I was interested in actually will put out something like 400W X 2 into 4 Ohms due to current limitations and protection circuitry. The kit uses a 500VA AnTek Toroidal Transformer and the caps on the power supply look pretty substantial. I just asked him what the total capacitance is in the kit power supply.

dyjohn, I'd likely use their power supply but can you suggest a soft start switch. I don't think the spst I have has that feature.
