Re: Steve's AV56WP74 Convergence Repair - with Pics

I'm not following what you're saying.

It probably is a chip/resistor issue if the old chips didn't have heat sink grease, but again - I'm amazed it ran a year that way!

It could easily be a bad solder joint / bad trace issue - whether the chip/resistors are bad or they simply aren't hooked up due to faulty solder connections, the end result is the same - it looks like the convergence is out.

Again, I'm having trouble following your note, but it looks like you're inferring that it worked after you replaced the chips and then immeadiately the problem returned? In this case, yeah, I'd suspect the new chips as being counterfeit.

I have no idea on the fuses as I've never had to mess with them on this set. I have no idea where they are even physically located. Usually when fuses blow though you can't tell, they don't usually discolor (though they can), they don't usually show any damage and the solder, etc. doesn't usually melt. They look fine, they are just damaged internally. Doesn't mean none of the above could happen, it just usually doesn't. If you're in doubt unsolder one side of each and test them and replace as needed.

If money is an issue then by all means test the resistors - usually it's just one or two out, unsolder one side and use an ohm meter and compare to the values I posted earlier.

LOL! Wife nagging! Been there, done that! 8-> yeah, they're big, bulky and in the way!

LOADS of fun to work on though! It's just satisfying to be able to actually FIX something in this day and age!

If it wasn't for this forum, I wouldn't really know where to begin. I've got tons of exsperience with simple circuits, but CRTs are a new ball game.

The learning curve wouldn't be as steep if I had a wiring diagram. That brings me to this question, which I havn't found a clear ansere for: can a power surge or poorly made component cause a resitor to short, or are the two shorted resistors I've found due to the IC going bad? $2 would be cheaper than $50

My wife is slowly getting use to my electronics hording lol

Yeah, that should do it . . . but $32 bucks for 13 resistors? That's like $2.50 a resistor! I'm sure I bought them all from Acme and I didn't pay nearly that. If you're ordering chips from Acme and already paying shipping you might as well as order everything from them.
