First time poster found the forum via the DIY BW screen thread. I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on purcahsing a projector for the first time, always wanted one just never could swing it, replacing my 53" pioneer rptv. So I am looking at 2 projectors, the mits hc4000 or the epson 8350, right now I am leaning at going with the mits and my screen size will be either 110, or 106 or 110...although I think 110 might be to big. It's in a multipurpose room and while watching hdtv etc will have some ambient light and seating will be back about 12' or so. So I done a lot of reading and and talked to quite a few folks about which basic screen material to go with, off white or grey. I have decided to go with grey since I think it will help to shed some of the ambient light. I have gotten quite a few samples from various mfg and have settled on either the elite cinegrey or the da-lite HCCV material which is lighter and has a higher gain. The dalite will cost more and not look as good (frame wise, perm wall) as the elite, but right now I tend to like the material better than the cinegrey. Does anyone have any opinions either way that may have seen both of them in action, I have read mechs dalite shootout, great information, just trying to get some more opinions...Thanks
That would be awesome...Thanks, just trying to cover all of my bases before pulling the trigger...The cinegrey looks much darker than the HCCV but I am wondering which one will do better in ambient lighting...Thanks again.
Not sure how accurate PJ central numbers are but for the HC4000, here is what I am playing with...
Ceiling mount Flush
Projector Mounter about 12' 2"
Zoom 1.31x (not quite in the middle but close)
106" screen
Gives me .9=16fl
1.0=18fl
1.1=19fl
Now cinegrey is rated at 1.0, HCCV 1.1, but I looked at the numbers for .9 for reference, now these number all go up if I go with a smaller screen of 100"...
I looked up the HC4000 in the calculator. Using a 110" CineGrey grey screen at 12'2" still gives you 15fL. You'd be fine going with that size screen. :T A 106" screen gets you 16fL. Keeping in mind that I use .9 for CineGrey's gain - that's what I measured it at IIRC.
Thanks for all of the work and quick turnaround, that probably makes sense that the HCCV woiuld have brighter whites, looks like the elite is in my future not to mention it is ~$250 cheaper and the frame looks better. Still contemplating between the mits and the epson, now I'm leaning towards the epson...not sure if I or anyone in the family is rainbow sensitive, and there is no where here to go demo one, I think I would like the sharpness of the mits but the epson is a good one too...decisions decisions...any thoughts about the 2?
So I purchased an Optoma hd131xe projector last week and needed a screen to go with it. My bedroom room where it will be used has a little ambient light that will get in it as it has french doors with white blinds. Plus, I plan to use it during the day so I was looking at a grey screen.
I looked on craigslist and saw some Da-Lite screens that were all matte white material and a couple Stewart Firehawk screens which the people did not know what the material was but thought it looked white and not likely the greyhawk screen. I was about to purchase a 110" Stewart Firehawk Luxus Deluxe Screenwall but after reading this thread, I am leaning towards getting a 100" Elite Screens Cinegrey EZ Frame screen which is also for sale locally. My third option would be a 106" Da-Lite High Contrast screen that is a pull down but I was thinking the pull down may get more wrinkles and unwanted artifacts in the image. You all seem to know a lot about screens, what would you all suggest?
I also looked at paint like SilverFire but it seemed like a lot of work and I wasn't sure if I was up for the challenge. Plus, I looked at my wall and it has a noticeable imperfection in the drywall which I didn't want to mess with.
My room: light blue walls, white trim, white ceiling and beige carpet. My wife doesn't want me to paint the back wall where the screen will go but I am considering painting it a dark brown or dark navy blue - what would you all suggest on that as well? Will I really get a better image if I paint it? I figured going with a grey screen would help compensate for my less than ideal wall colors. I cannot do a black or anything that radical because of WAF.
Throw Distance and lamberts: I will have my projector on a tall bookshelf about 12' from the screen. Projector central says I will get an image brightness of 37 fl with a 1.0 gain screen (33 fl with a .9 gain screen like the Cinegrey). That seems pretty high but I can likely run it in eco to get that down if need be. I also plan on using 3D so that extra fl might be a good thing.
So, I got the elite screen delivered from my eBay purchase. The box was damaged on both sides and all the screws fell out. Stinks, but bought similar replacements from Lowes and installed it later that day. Setup was not that hard. The screen was rolled for shipment and in one spot has some dimples from being rolled up. I hope those guy away now that it's stretched across the frame. Does anyone know if they will? Screen looks OK but blacks look faded. It might be my projector so I will continue to play around with the settings. Overall, I am happy with my screen purchase which cost me less than $100 shipped on eBay. Ambient light viewing is not bad, I can see a better picture with the projector than with my Panasonic plasma during the day b/c of the plasm's glass screen which causes so much glare. Blacks are better on the Panasonic w/ambient light but you can't see most of the screen b/c of glare.
Hello,
I just purchased an Epson 6030UB (Ceiling Mount: 12'8" away form screen). I would like to use a 110" screen but not sure if I should go with cinewhite or cinegrey. Mechman could you provide any input? Your help is greatly appreciated. Im worried at this throw distance the cinewhite might be to bright...
Room details:
Walls have been painted flat black
black out curtains have been placed over all windows
90-95% of all ambient light has been eliminated.
