Colors off on my HD 1080 Mitsubishi

Hello. I am brand new to this forum and so please hang in there while I describe the problem I am having.

Specs on TV:
Mitsubishi WS-65908 rear projection 65"
Manufactured July 2001

About 6 months ago, once a week or every couple of weeks, my TV showed like some type of interference on the left side (almost like speaker interference on a tube TV when you put a magnet to it) It would occur for 2-5 seconds and then stop and the picture would be fine.

The problem continued along the same path but with more frequency over the next few months. When distortion began to last longer than 10-30 seconds, I could turn off and then turn on the tv and it would be fine.

Now it appears to be permanent. I took a picture of the convergence screen (hopefully it will be posted - if not, I can email you the picture) and you can see the lines on the left and right side of the screen are WAY off. They can not be corrected by adjusting with the remote.

Any ideas what is going on here? I attempted to read through some other postings with users have similar issues like mine but I think mine might be a little more specific...

Are there any Mitsubishi technicians in the Atlanta area that any of you recommend?

PLEASE HELP!!!!

This is not a typical symptom. Normally, I would say you just have a cold solder joint or a failing output amp in the convergence circuit, but it would usually give you more curvature. This is mostly horizontal linearity and some point anomolies. Could be a bad connection to the convergence module, the convergence module itself, corrupt data, or just a bad output IC. One would have to make further checks on the set to be sure.

Call Richard at MasterTech.

Thanks for the advice. I will call Richard on Monday and see if I can schedule an apointment with him.

On each of the problems that you listed, how much do you think it would cost to fix them? I'm just trying to get a round-about number so i dont go into total shock when he comes out to take a look.

Thanks again,
John

I have no idea about his rates, you will have to ask him. I know that he is very professional and will fix it right, by his reputaion and from interacting with him in training and on forums online. He is very active with ISF and HAA.

LCaillo, do you know of any other repair technicians in the atlanta area that you could recommend to me? I called Richard at MasterTech, left a message and also sent and email but i haven't heard back from him.

Thanks!

Sorry, that is my only recommendation. I don't know any other shops up there.

Re: Colors off on my HD 1080 Mitsubishi

jataga, it looks like there is a problem with the convergence circuit. If you are at all brave enough, you might try taking the back off (ONLY if you feel qualified to do so!) and try disconnecting and reconnecting cables, especially the ones that go to the convergence sensors along the sides of the screen (from the back). As a former tv repairman (back when there were gas tv's), it might just be a connection problem. Please don't do this unless you are sure of your skills and make sure you unplug the tv first!. PS- even tho I worked at a shop in Atlanta, I can't remember exactly where it was located and If my memory serves me, they specialized in VCR's and (gulp!) RCA Selectavision. (don't ask). Dennis

Re: Colors off on my HD 1080 Mitsubishi

Thanks for the advice. I am having someone come out tomorrow to work on the TV so i will just shadow him to see what he does so that if it happens again, I can get in there and possibly fix it. I sent an email to the guy and he said that it was a common problem and that LCaillo diagnosis was accurate. Actually, when he saw the picture, he mentioned the same thing that was in LCaillo's reply.

Anyway, I've never taken apart a TV and I don’t imagine it is that difficult but I think i will let the professional do it the first time. after that, I will know how and then i can do it myself.

Thanks again for all the help!
