Mitsubishi VS-50805 colors are out of alignment

I have a Mit VS-50805 purchased in 2000. The colors appear to be out of alignment. I called a service tech and he said the tubes need to be replaced. From what I've read this sounds wrong. Where should I start in trying to determine the actual problem?

I am located in Orange County, CA

The first thing to do is to get a good description of the problem. What do you see? Colors out of alignment could be interpreted as a convergence problem or a gray scale problem, or even a color decoding problem. Likely it is a convergence problem, and you need to read the sticky thread on the matter in this forum. You have come to the right place for help.

Re: Mitsubishi VS-50805 colors are out of alignment

Thanks for the reply.

Here are the details....
Right side of screen quivers, Left doesn't

Getting an hourglass effect from side to side

Seeing triple images/shadows (in red, blue, green) red image goes up and to the left, blue image goes down and to the right and the green image is in the middle

Image sort of lines up in the center and progressively gets worse towards side to side, and top to bottom

Tried to reset convergence to factory settings with no effect.

I've told the kids to not use the TV until it gets repaired as it may make it worse, Is this correct?

I looked at the sticky thread but I've never repaired a TV before so I don't understand all of it. I spent ten years or so doing electronic assembly in an R&D (mainly building computers) lab so I know how to spot IC's heat sinks, etc. and how to solder.

I'm not sure if I should be calling a different tech or attempting repair myself. Either way I'd like to have a better grasp as to what the problem may be so that I don't get taken advantage of by someone who thinks I'm just a housewife and wouldn't know a resistor from a capacitor.

If you know someone in my area I'd be willing to give them a call.

I appreciate you taking the time to help me.

You have a bad convergence IC. The other thing you need to look very carefully for is a coolant leak on this model. If you have a coolant leak, note the coordinates that are affected before moving anything. If not, the repair will be straightforward and require replacing the output ICs and/or resoldering the connections.
