Shoot in raw, quality over quantity, make up for your lens defects with ps/lightroom

Re: Best Photography Tips!!!

Look at as many good photos as you can. Check out sites like onexposure.net, but more importantly go to gallaries and museums. It's hard to know what your quality level is until you've seen the very best. (Note, though, that just because an image is in a book, gallery or museum doesn't make it a good photo. Artistic judgments are subjective. That said, if you can see images by Irving Penn, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock ... by all means do so.) Try to figure out why you like or dislike a photo. Invest in a large trash can.

Re: Best Photography Tips!!!

Anyone have any tips fpor getting clear detailed shots close up and in poor light conditions on the cheapy P&S cameras?

I tend to never get the photo I want when photographing things like porojects, speakers, etc.

Thanks

Use a tripod, and if possible check the histogram. Use exposure compensation to get the histogram where it should be. Ideally, there will be a full range of values without any hitting either the very left or right edge of the histogram.

Re: Best Photography Tips!!!

Some cameras have a cable remote that can be purchased. This with a tripod can get some very sharp pictures in low light conditions. If its inside in controlled conditions, check to see if your camera can be controlled via a USB cable connected to your laptop. Some can.

Re: Best Photography Tips!!!

Great advice all!

Tripods are a must in the dark with long exposure time.
My P&S has presets that allow for up to 60 seconds of exposure! That's extreme for getting shots of starts at night but 15 seconds can really be cool in some low light settings.

Rather than a trigger, I set the 2 or 10 second timer and that gives me enough time to get my hands away from the camera and hold still.
If I use 15 - 60 second exposures, I'll set the delay for 10 secs and run far away so I'm not warbling the floor with the slight shifts in weight that people make as a result of balance.
