Hi, I'm new to the forum and will spend most of the day reading all the fine info on this forum!!
Just picked up a Epson HC 8350 projector. I'll be putting it in our big 60'x40' garage - Man Cave :D - It's heated and we have a ton of sporting even parties out there. Looking for info to build a 200" screen ( 98"x173").

Question: what will be the best material for the screen - MDF, Drywall, Paneling
and which paint to go with.

Thanks!!

I'm looking to build a 200" screen ( 98"x173" )
My pj is 20ft from the wall and it's in a 60'x40' garage with 15' side walls. White ceiling and white and gray walls.

Do you have any advice on a screen that big? I figure we'll do two sheets of drywall 16' pieces cut down and have one seem to do. Or is there a way to utilize mdf and fill the seem and screw holes and sand down?

I'm willing to spend up to $150 on the paint, as I realize my room settings aren't adequate but this is our 40 x 60 garage - aka man cave - that we hold a ton of sporting event parties in. So, I'm willing to spend extra on paint to help compensate if I can for the lighter walls and ceiling. but there is no windows and I can control the lighting to an extent, but do need enough light for people to eat, walk around and socialize as well.

any info will be Very much appreciated!!! I'll be reading the forum all day!!!!!

further reading, I see these as good possibilities ( just not sure what would work best with my Epson HC 8350 and current room conditions):

C&S™ Ultra made with Valspar Ultra Premium white tinted to produce a neutral C&S™ screen
C&S™ Ultra made with Valspar Ultra Premium Enamel ultra white tinted to produce a neutral C&S™ screen (this is the official C&S™ Ultra mix)
Sherwin-Williams ProClassic interior acrylic latex 'Extra White' B20 W 51 in satin finish
Sherwin-Williams Color to Go (their cheap sample paint) 'Extra White' A91 W 251 in satin finish

I would go with a white. At 200", you have hardly any lumens to spare even in a dark room. Have you viewed this image in the dark at all yet? I would think it would be a bit dim. With the lamp on high, the elite projector calculator puts you at 4.8fL. Ideally, you'd want that number to be 12-16fl.

The SW would probably be fine as you won't be hitting it with a lot of lumens - I believe it normally hot spots. And the other two would be fine as well. I think Glidden makes the whitest white out there IIRC.

I'd try to keep the screen area (not the screen itself but the areas around it) as dark as possible.

My screen actually works out to be 175" diagonal, and seems to have great pic, brightness, and clarity on just the drywall finish.
If using the Glidden paint, what finish and color code should I go with?
Is Glidden my best option?
I understand my conditions aren't ideal, but looking for the best I can get out of my conditions.

Thanks again everyone for all your input, this forum has been Great!!

yep, plan on using just a lil distilled water. decided to spray it on as well. picked up a Graco True Coat Plus 2 sprayer to lay it down.
The paint person said the oil based kilz is thinner and will lay down better than the kilz2 latex. and that the Glidden Premium Flat White latex will lay down nice right over the kilz.

Does this sound ok?
