Seen on its own merits, True Grit is a well made and enjoyable western, and probably deserves the accolades it has received. However, comparisons are inevitable, and I can't accept that it is a patch (pun intended) on the 1969 version, which has more warmth, humour, emotion and excitement. Lacking the charisma of Wayne, the music of Bernstein and the more rounded adversaries, it also either under plays or almost throws away most of the pivotal scenes.

Where next? A re-make of Shane?

This remake stands on its own....the original is one of the best films of its time.....
