I run into people now and then that only know the basics of how to use the Matchrite software. It is odd that they said they can no longer mix PPG paints by name because of some sort of buy out, but that they can color match it if you provide a sample . Like I mentioned, I ran into that exact situation the other day and it was because the girl didn't know how to do it and didn't want to ask anyone. Lowes has carried Olympic paints for a long time and they never had an issue matching any brand or color.

When I was talking to the main paint guy at my local Lowes he said they pride themselves in being able to being able to match anything Even Behr paints.

So much of the trouble with getting a paint made in another companies color has to do with the specific "paint person" you get at the store. Some will work with you and some won't, either because of ineptitude or lack of desire. Been there...

The time I wanted to get a Glidden color made in a Behr paint at Home Depot the woman told me "We don't mix Glidden colors in Behr paint.", note she did not say "Can't", but "Don't".

I know for a fact that they could if they wanted to; I have a friend that owns an independent hardware store that used to be an Ace store, he has a paint matching computer (a standard Windows PC) that is only used for that purpose and it runs X-rite Matchrite software. If someone comes in with a paint they want matched and that brand isn't in their computer database all they have to do is call X-rite and they will give them the formula for the Ace paint tint over the phone!

It's good to know Lowe's can match the Behr paint codes. I was going to ask about that the next time I get to a Lowe's. That could turn out to be VERY handy for reasons unspecified at this time.

My personal opinion is some people don't want to ask because it makes them seem like they are inept, which they really are. By not asking, they are only telling me they are both arrogant and perhaps embarassed to say they have to ask for help. X-Rite has a course anyone can take on the Matchrite software (and if anyone doesn't think I haven't taken that online course.... I have a nice mica screen I can recommend to you! )

Behr is a Home Depot exclusive, and all the local Home Depots around me have all said the same thing. There are certain brands of paint they can't pull up in their computer, but... they still can 'color match'. How close that match really is I can't say because they also don't (at least at my stores) provide an actual DE. Lowes can call up even Behr colors, and they will provide a DE... but again, you have to be dealing with the main paint department staff and not a stand in.

I ran into the same thing with Wilsonart Laminates. The regular kitchen department staff know exactly what we are talking about, but again sometimes we run into a 'stand in', and they tell me there is no such thing as Fashion Grey or Designer White... or that they don't carry it. Same store, different person and they tell you something totally different.

The main thing I am saying is never take no for an answer, and if someone tells anyone they can't mix a specific color from another company when we already confirmed they can, well... ask for someone else or come back when the main person is working. Temp help is always questionable.

The biggest tip I can give anyone... Behr is exclusive... Valspar isn't. My local True Value carries Valspar, as does a local contractor store called Curtis Lumber, and neither are affiliated with Lowes. So case in point, you don't have to go just to Lowes to get Valspar products, but you do have to go to Home Depot to get Behr products (like the awful White Opal Pearlescence) but you can get any Valspar products at a number of stores. But Lowes can mix Behr paints, while Home Depot can't necessarily mix all Lowes/Valspar paint codes unless they have a physical sample.

Also I want to add... It is so easy to just call any company and confirm something a part time employee said. I do it all the time!

Like I was saying I rely on myself - bring in the base number and the tint recipe you should be all set.

No. We haven't done any significant testing with Floetrol. I doubt it would effect it but who knows?

Re: Is this the correct BW mix?

Thanks mech,

Looks like the mix is pretty fluid as is anyways. Must be the AAA.
