Welcome to the Shack!

Tell us about the room...wall/ceiling/flooring color.

What are your viewing conditions...is the room fully light-controlled, or is their ambient light (and if so, how much)?

What is the seating distance, and what size screen do you want (if you know that already)?

There's some great resources on this board, but they need this basic information before giving you input.

Re: Screen surface type for Optoma EP719

We'll need a little information, such as desired screen size, room dimensions, how far back the projector will be... will it be ceiling mounted... what are the lighting conditions like? Controlled or uncontrolled?

If you are planning on ceiling mounting the projector, a retro-reflective glass bead screen is out. You won't get any of the benefits of the screen properties with a ceiling mounted setup.

Small room - 16' x 12' x 8'
2 windows with shades. Dark at night (isn't it most places?)
Likely mounted on a platform behind the viewers, distance to screen 10'-12'.
Looking at various portable screens 50" to 70" wide.

The EP719 can only really be table mounted ~6" bellow the bottom of the screen or ceiling mounted ~6" above the screen. This projector has no lens shift so minor tilting and keystone correction my be required.

Rated at 2000 ANSI lumens, our test sample produced 1465 ANSI lumens with settings tailored to presentation. When tuned to settings more favorable for balanced colors and better quality video, lumen output was still 417 ANSI lumens. This highly adjustable output means that the EP719 is adaptable to many different situations and audience sizes.

Contrast, rated at 2500:1, is easily good enough to display text, powerpoint presentations, and spreadsheets that are easy on the eyes. When used for video, the EP719 can crush the low end of the grayscale if not calibrated carefully. However, once adjusted, the EP719 can display video admirably.

The EP719 has a mild upward throw angle - around 10% of image height. This means that for a 100" diagonal image, the bottom edge of the picture will be 6" above the centerline of the lens. This is an ideal upward angle for placement on a conference table, and should keep setup very simple indeed.l
I am familiar with this projector because my neighbor has one. I have been impressed with the image my neighbor is producing with it and a matte gray screen.

From the review you can see that it fairly bright when optimized for video viewing. As the review indicates a good brightness and contrast calibration is advisable. We used the THX optimizer utility with good results.

Do you require a portable screen?

What colors are the walls, ceiling, and flooring?

I assume you have the projector already?

Re: Screen surface type for Optoma EP719

Unfortunately it is not going to be a permanent set up. I'll be getting a portable screen. Ceiling is off-white, the walls are kinda peach to salmon, and the floor is covered by an oriental rug with predominate red. The projector will be on loan to me for a while. Is the THX optimizer utility something one can run from a laptop computer? What about the Monster/ISF HDTV Calibration Wizard DVD?

I don't see why you couldn't run the THX optimizer from a laptop. As for the Monster/ISF DVD, it makes a good frisbee! Seriously, I've heard nothing good about it. If you could find someone with an Avia or DVE disk, that would be much better.

Like their speaker cable... more hype than help.

Jay,

I'm not quite done with my Da-Lite review but I have a lot of pictures up in my Photobucket account. Peruse the ones that either say Da-Lite or have a DL in them if you'd like.
