| If I didn't already have the TV Winter Mist up... I have a new PJ coming. It is a Marantz vp-4001. As you guys know I have a TV Winter Mist for the Mitsu HC1500 light cannon I was using. So I'm thinking I may need a white screen and possibly even with some gain for this lower lumen Marantz? I don't want to lose any of its' higher contrast though? | ||||

Other than that, I'd suggest waiting to see how the PFG solution pans out...it looks really good, and it probably won't be too long before we know more about it. It looks better to me than any other DIY solutions I've seen, but Bill and mech have more work to do before releasing it upon the masses.

| Re: If I didn't already have the TV Winter Mist up... did you not read what i posted in the vp4001 thread??? ![]() you'll be fine with the winter mist as long as you run the PJ in it's medium iris mode which still equates to 4000:1 contrast ratio and spanks the out of the hc1500 for picture quality. run the PJ with both iris' open and it's just as bright as the HC1500 except it will be running with much more accurate colors and te contrast levels will still be a little better than you are getting right now. there's no need to run this PJ in full lamp mode. ps. that was for your 110" screen. | ||||

Keep in mind that Winter Mist is pretty light gray and there are actually commercial screen that say they are 'white' but actually darker than Winter Mist. | Re: If I didn't already have the TV Winter Mist up... mech, i think most people were in on the second-act deal for right about 1,250 bones and yeah, the marantz is a rebadged sharp xv-z3000 (i have the z3000) though the marantz has a much better warranty period and is alleged to have improved optics. if i was buying another one today i'd definitely choose the marantz version unless i was getting the freakishly good deal that i got on my z3000 ![]()

| Re: If I didn't already have the TV Winter Mist up... eagles, if you check out some of my screen shots i did in the neutral gray screen thread you have to keep in mind that: 1) i'm using a really source to make those pics. 2) my bulb has close to 800 hours on it. 3) all 3 shades of gray that i used were darker than your winter wind. 4) all pics were taken with both iris' stopped down and in movie 2 so it's as dim as it gets. my screen is 90" so it's a fair bit smaller than your but it gives you an idea at least. | ||||

| Re: If I didn't already have the TV Winter Mist up... gbrnole....so what do you think about a white screen for this Marantz? Or from what I read above do you think I should stick with the Winter Mist? Before the whites weren't quite right because of clear segment on color wheel of HC1500, now they are not quite right with this PJ, so that's why I was thinking white.... ...or anyone else that has a reccomendation for what type of DIY white screen. | Re: If I didn't already have the TV Winter Mist up... your whites aren't quite right in what regard? too gray, too green, too blue, too red? keep in mind i'm using a z3000 and the only real difference between your PJ and my PJ is that your PJ has stronger and more true greens than mine does so it's a hair more suited to material like designer white laminate and commercial screens than mine is (i need the more flat [strong] green value that neutral color provides) i'm pretty sure that you mentioned you watch most all of your tv/movies in a darkened room - if this is the case your vp4001 will work just fine with white paint. if you add ambient light then you would really want to keep the winter mist. most of all though you need to make absolutely sure that your brightness and contrast levels are adjusted properly. in the other forum i've seen an awful lot of people running extremely low brightness numbers (-15) while their contrast is up a bit (~+4) and this is massively different to the settings i have to use to get the proper balance. back to white screen though- if you want to go white then i think your money would be best spent on designer white laminate otherwise i would just get a quart of behr UPW 1850 if you don't want to mess with poly or a qt or behr upw 1050 and poly coat it. the old faithful kilz2 works wonderfully but you can't scrub it and check with bill to see if he has checked out sherwin williams premium white? | ||||

| Re: If I didn't already have the TV Winter Mist up... Sherwin Williams Luminous White will work too, and Rosco's Off Broadway White White is outstanding and the company even acknowledges it is regularly used as a screen paint. UPW still works extremely well and should be on your list of options for a painted white screen. Designer White is still an extremely good screen option, it costs a little more but has a lot of benefits to using it. | Re: If I didn't already have the TV Winter Mist up... They are a tad too gray, which I attributed to the Winter Mist. I don't want to be too washed out on weekend afternoons, but when I went from Kilz2 to the W.M., the contrast and color improvement was much more obvious than the help with ambnient light...it didn't seem to do all that much? Hmmm...... | ||||

| Re: If I didn't already have the TV Winter Mist up... technically winter mist is a bit too light of a shade to be a good neutralizer for ambient light - better than white but not a whole lot. this is why i went for a midpoint between winter mist and winter mountain because i found winter mountain shade to be too dark and winter mist shade to be absolutely brilliant in a dark room but not so much if some ambient light shines in. i don't find whites to be in the least bit compromised though? | ||||
