Compensating for a color 'Push'

The last couple days of experimentation have left me a bit frustrated. But in order to further DIY I'm going to disclose some of what's taken place over the last couple of days. And besides, I think it's time to start posting actual data.

We start off with a completely flat, neutral product:

But we have to come up with a base for this. What better to add to a neutral than a neutral, right? Some spectro readings. I'm going to start another thread shortly dealing with store variances.

Luminous White

RGB 247 247 242
xyY 0.315 0.334 92.7
L*ab 97.1 -1.05 2.30

Luminous White PFG 6:1

RGB 213 215 214
xyY 0.312 0.331 67.8
L*ab 85.9 -1.21 0.31

Luminous White 4:1

189 192 193
0.309 0.328 52.5
77.6 -1.13 -0.99

Soothing White from EasyRGB

227 227 229
0.312 0.327 76.9
90.3 0.29 -0.83

PFG - Soothing White 5:1

RGB 183 187 187
xyY 0.310 0.329 49.2
L*ab 75.6 -1.14 -0.59

Winter Mist EasyRGB

220 220 220
0.313 0.329 71.7
87.8 -0.06 0.03

PFG - Winter Mist 5:1

RGB 191 193 195
xyY 0.310 0.327 53.2
L*ab 78.0 -0.70 -0.96

Kilz2

234 237 234
0.313 0.332 84.1
93.5 -1.31 0.96

PFG - Kilz2 5:1

RGB 175 181 185
xyY 0.304 0.323 45.5
L*ab 73.2 -1.19 -3.08

Outside of Soothing White, which was just plain whacky compared to the others, you'll notice that the pfg drops the Red number most and then the green and blue. This is looking strictly at RGB numbers. So I came up with the idea of trying True Value Sonnata or Decorative Motif. Lowes could not get the Sonnata to match within their criteria so I just bought some Decorative Motif to try and compensate for how the pfg pushes. It doesn't work in this situation. Nor did our attempt with the Violet Disguise.

FYI Decorative Motif original according to EasyRGB:

242 239 239
0.315 0.329 86.9
94.7 1.02 0.31

Decorative Motif 4:1

183 189 195
0.304 0.322 50.5
76.4 -1.17 -3.44

Violet Disguise from Lowes

238 235 240
0.312 0.325 84.1
93.5 1.56 -1.80

Violet Disguise 3:1 ratio

RGB 178 184 190
xyY 0.304 0.322 47.6
L*ab 74.6 -1.11 -3.43

Violet Disguise 4:1 ratio

183 189 194
0.304 0.322 50.5
76.4 -1.07 -3.34

At this point our two best options for further testing are Winter Mist (which I'm out of at the moment) and Luminous White. I have a couple test panels 5:1 Winter Mist and 6:1 Luminous White. I'm going to paint up several more - 4:1 and 3:1.

Top coat experimentation

Pearl Silver

RGB 190 190 187
xyY 0.315 0.333 51.5
L*ab 77.0 -0.76 1.65

Topcoat PS

RGB 131 130 128
xyY 0.315 0.333 22.4
L*ab 54.4 -0.24 1.18

A lot of people, myself included sometimes, get too wrapped up in the RGB numbers. I think that's ill advised when trying to pick a neutral or adjusting/compensating for something, such as a pearl/poly or pearlizing medium/poly top coat. Even mixing two neutrals together results in shifting away from neutral. The main thing we should be keeping an eye on are the a and b values as well as the x and y. These are the determining factor for where a color is and where a mix is going.

Bill has an excellent write up on these values in the Data and Testing Definitions sticky up top.
