DIYTheater.com No Contrast screen paint kit

Any ways, as I have finally settled on my screen size, I began the application. I had previously put down four coats of Killz2 to cover up the red paint. I used that for a few weeks to be sure I was OK with the size and everything.

Yesterday, I put two coats of the included primer just to be safe. It does not dry as fast as the Killz2 and it smoothed out on top of the Killz2 very nice. I basically have to put my nose against the screen to see anything. The texture of the wall is less than that of an eggshell.

So, six coats total on top of the deep red paint. The directions say to wait a minimum of six hours before applying the screen paint so I let it go over night.

I just finished my first coat of the screen paint. Waiting an hour before applying the second coat. I noticed that the paint that got on my hands is sparkling. As if some super fine glitter was in the paint. Also, the paint is not as white as one might think. I have definitely seen whiter paint, I'd even say that Killz2 is more white than the screen paint. Now, just to clarify, this is a subtle difference in white and I am not saying that Killz2 has a higher gain and has a more uniform spectral balance. I have no clue on that.

I am taking pics which I'll post when I have completed the screen. I'll make some paint chips and take some pics of the screen paint and the Killz2 to see side-by-side.

Thanks for the update, eb. What shade did you end up getting?

EDIT: Nevermind, I should try reading your thread title.

Heh...

Any ways, this paint is definitely more reflective. I have not even turned the projector on and the last coat is still drying but it's that obvious! Although this isn't a scientific observation, going by the illumination from the spot lights set off to the left and right of the screen edge, the lighting is more uniform. Before, the center of the screen was fairly dark. Now, it's considerably brighter and the illumination is more even across the entire screen.

I'm pretty stoked right now. Just 45 more minutes...

Re: DIYTheater.com No Contrast screen paint kit

Hi eb!

I don't know if you have experimented with any of the pearl or silver "craft" paints (Delta, Folkart etc.), but if you have you may have noticed that the reflective particles in them, under close examination, appear to break white light up into colors especially a light green and light magenta. I would love to know if the top coat of paint you used does the same thing or if the reflections just appear white.

Harp, I can answer that and say no, DIY Theatre doesn't use mica or craft paint anything. This is specially designed and researched, and the DIY Theatre folks have a really good product.

Yup... PM me your address and I'll mail you a paint chip. It's a 4x6 card that I rolled a few coats onto.

The total cost was $179 for the kit. It included 1/2 gallon of primer, 1/2 gallon of the No Contrast, and two rollers. It sounds expensive, and it is, but for someone like me who wanted it "done" it's well worth it.

Everything looks outstanding, the image looks like it is like "floating" in front of us.

I have not used any of the calibration discs yet either. I'll try those a little later. My bulb only has 40 hours on it or so.
