Re: Further Investigations...

I'll say it before anyone else does... not the nicest spectral curve we've seen. Not the worse, but not the best either.

Which 'mech's headache' is that? The first one has some really good looking numbers and that's a surprising spectral curve based on those (if this is the first one).

That's actually better than the original BW's.

If you look at where they are at around 420nM, it's about .45 and it shoots up to a high of around .51 and back down to about .48.

The new Auto Air mix is at .5 and stays pretty much there across the curve, climbing to about .51 and dipping to slightly under 5 near the tail end. Much better 'lack' of curve. Unless I'm cuckoo in the head!

Re: Further Investigations...

I'm going to state my intentions so that anyone who's interested knows where I'm going with this.

First off I'm going to try and adjust the base so that the final product is somewhere within plus or minus 50 of D65.

Second I'm going to find good matches for this base on EasyRGB and I'll pick the three or four closest and try them out. Then re-measure , re-evaluate, re-adjust if neccessary, and re-do if needed.

Finally when everything looks good, get it added to the BW thread!

As much as I hate giving time lines, I want to be done by Tuesday.

Success!!!!

Might be a bit premature but the mad scientist mech has gotten the mix tamed!! I'll double check these numbers tonight after curing but I'm extremely happy!!

The preliminary numbers

0.312 0.329 47.3
74.4 -0.43 -0.14

Re: Further Investigations...

The numbers tonight of the Auto Air Black Widow 4:1 mix. This is after 10+ hours of drying/curing.

184 185 185
0.311 0.329 48.3
75.0 -0.40 -0.31

I think it's safe to say that we're there now! And it's lightening a bit as it cures.

Mech, Awesomes new and hard work! A 3am post shows some super dedication that we all appreciate! Would you be able to show me what the Auto Air looks like or where to snag some of it? Sorry if it's already been posted somewhere else. I'm done looking at the Kilz2 screen and I'm ready for BW.

Will you be on the chat tonight?

Re: Further Investigations...

Dick Blick sells it, and you can do a search on Createx Auto Air for other stores and locations.

Can't speak for mech, but I'll be on chat and he's usually in and out.

It would have helped if I went back to the beginning of the thread!!!

This is what I found. A few places near me carry it:

4101 Aluminum Base (fine)

Mech,

What base color did you use with this? I might be willing to give this a shot if you think it's all set.

I've located the AAA at Charrette. Woo Hoo!! I'm going to grab some tonight. Now I just need to know what base color to mix it with.

Brian,

I'm holding off until I get a quart of the 2 'dead on' matches that I found and test them out for neutral. And then I'll paint a couple panels and take a few pics. Should be Tuesday I hope...

Re: Further Investigations...

Since I don't have much to do in this thread until Monday I took another reading.

184 185 184
0.312 0.329 48.1
74.9 -0.36 -0.08

This is of the Auto Air Black Widow final. It appears to be curing nicely!

I wish it was Monday...

Re: Further Investigations...

Brian (bidzer) our beta tester has reported back:

Quote:
I got the PPG/AAA mix up on the screen this afternoon. All I can say is WOW!!! Now my SP-7210 looks like reference PJ it's been touted as. The quality is beyond my expectations. Black Levels are impressive as well as color depth. I'm using the D65 factory settings that are spot on with this PJ. I've got lamps on in the room pretty bright and it laughable at how little they affect the screen.

I've got the 360 hooked up now for some reference material. Unreal.....
Comcast has HD photo galleries on demand and I've been watching them all afternoon, LOL

My brother came over as well and was super impressed himself. I'll have some screenshots once I can find my tripod. I'm going to grab some time release shots with some high F-Stops so they're nice and crisp.

I'm in PJ heaven right now. Wifey wants to watch Night at the Museum on HBO-HD. Thanks for all your help.

Mech, when i saw the BW thread for the first time, I told myself that's what I want for the new PJ! It looked impressive, immediately. Tonight I was watching Night at the Museum and the picture on the PJ/BW destroyed my Westy 47" LCD, by a good sized margin. It's that good.
It appears that we have hit the nail on the head yet again here at the Shack! That's why this is the best DIY Screen forum on the net!

Tuesday will be the day folks! After I test color matches from Lowe's!

Re: Further Investigations...

Mech,

I'm extremely satisifed. I still can't get over the color of the screen :-)

I'm trying to find my tripod to get some good screen shots going. With 2 little ones under 2, that is a challenge until they're sleeping!!!

I've got the day off tomorrow and the kids are in daycare, Woooo!!!! LOL

The off viewing angle is superb, good at 160 degrees and above.

Here are some shots from this morning with 2 windows open all the way. The side viewing angle is super!!! Shots are still impressive. I'll have some dark secreenies tonight from the 360.

Re: Further Investigations...

Very very nice Brian!

Ambient light from a bulb can wreak havoc on a screen image, but the killer is sunlight, especially at the angle that window is from. Is that how bright it looks in person?

That first shot is really amazing, looks like you could jump right in the water.

The penguins shot also has very clean and crisp looking whites. I think that dispels the comments that there is a blue lean! I believe those comments were in reference to the 'further testing' and not the finished Black Widow recommendations. The finished application is balanced out (that is why it took so long) and your shot definitely shows some good looking whites as well as dark blacks. Not to mention the colors look fantastic as well!

Re: Further Investigations...

Why Thank You Bill :-)

The actual PJ picture looks MUCH better than the pictures already show. I mean this thing is sooooo realistic. This is DC3 and the blacks are truly impressive. I would grab another one of these for a grand. No question....

The BW has definitely brought out the Videophile advantages of the 7210. I'll have more pics tonight with it completely dark. The images are not rendered at all, raw shots. I need to check the WB to ISO settings.
