Re: Further Investigations...

I had to make sure I had the tripod setup the pics. I didn't want to tarnish the beautiful image that the BW is providing. I had the F-Stop at 22 and the Shutter speed at 10 seconds. I have to let alot of light in as I don't have any natural light.

I'll probably have to adjust the shutter speed tonight in the complete dark. The camera is a Nikon D70 with a 28-105mm sigma lens. Good thing I know a little bit about photography which helps me spread the word and portray how insanely good this looks.

These are Raw photos not enhanced at all. I've a Dr. Seuss "Horton Hears a Who" HD trailer which I'll capture tonight as well.

I lose no quality is screen brightness at all from 170 degrees. The images are much better in person which really shows what this combo 11can do. I would buy another Infocus SP-7210 in a minute!!! The picture is buttery

Re: Further Investigations...

Here are a few pics just to show the difference with some ambient light, that AL is a 75w bulb, showing the typical orange glow..
The pics aren't the best quality(not meant to be), but it clearly shows the difference of the test panels, and the original "Pebble beach(grey)"+ poly top coat.

The panels are only 2x2, in the top middle of the picture, pay attention to the transition areas for differences..

How's ya hat:

Re: Further Investigations...

Her hair looks orangy with the AL on- the test panel looks better.
The dinosaur looks washed out except for the panel.

Re: Further Investigations...

The panels are primed with two coats of Kilz2.

I have identified 2 colors from the Pittsburgh Paint and Glass line that match my 'Mech's Headache' tint almost identically! I went to Lowe's today to get these matched, as I don't have a PPG store here. That went off without a hitch.

The mixes have been mixed and small samples drawn for spectro readings. The small samples will take a bit to dry yet. Expect readings shortly. They look identical to the other sample I made up previously.

At this point I'm waiting for the panels to completely dry and then I will apply two coats to each panel.

Expect more updates as the day wears on!

Re: Further Investigations...

*Gulp*

The numbers for the first quart of 'mech's headache', color matched at Lowe's, and mixed with Auto Air Aluminum Fine.

185 185 185
0.313 0.329 48.8
75.3 -0.03 -0.03

Yowsa!

The second color matched quart same as above.

189 190 190
0.312 0.328 51.4
76.9 -0.29 -0.35

I think we have two very good candidates! No one is sitting around waiting for this are they?

Keep in mind that they are not cured 100% yet. It seems to take a little over a day before these numbers settle in. But there's usually not too much of a change. I think we found an easier way to make Black Widow!

Re: Further Investigations...

37 viewing...

OK here it is. The long version! First off I came about finding this base on a complete whim. Believe it or not my daughter needed to paint a school project and she wanted tan bricks. So I took a couple cups of Sherwin Williams Luminous White and added some brown to it. I cannot recall how much exactly it was (I wasn't doing this for me at the time!!) but I'd like to say it was six or seven good sized drops.

Well without further ado here's the lighthouse:

And the laptop my other daughter made. It's painted with one of the Black Widow failures!

The original numbers for this mix which was dubbed 'mech's headache' (really should have been 'Maddie's Lighthouse'!) was this:

234 221 209
0.330 0.342 73.7
88.8 2.29 7.44

And when mixed with Auto Air 4:1

189 191 191
0.311 0.329 52.0
77.3 -0.96 -0.31

Pretty close but Smokey Joe taught me to me to never be satisfied! We then decided to tweak it. Bill (wbassett) had me try some things and they worked! The final numbers for 'mech's headache' (Maddie's Lighthouse):

Mixed 4:1 with Auto Air

184 185 184
0.312 0.329 48.1
74.9 -0.36 -0.08

The numbers for the base?

232 211 200
0.337 0.341 68.2
86.1 5.48 8.23

A nice peach I guess! And the one paint manufacturer that actually makes a couple colors extremely close to this is "PPG The Voice of Color". That would be Pittsburgh Paint and Glass to us normal folks!

Numbers 427-2 (Bermuda Beige) and 327-2 (Bare Beige) were very close to our color.

Since finding this out we leaked the colors to one individual. Our beta tester bidzer. He purchased the Bermuda Beige.

I on the other hand, do not live in an area where PPG is sold. At least not according to their web page. I didn't view this as a problem though as I knew Lowe's had PPG in their database. Today I purchased a quart of each in Ultra Premium Flat Enamel. The numbers for the Bermuda Beige match:

232 209 197
0.339 0.342 66.6
85.3 6.32 8.67

The numbers for the Bare Beige match:

238 216 206
0.336 0.340 71.9
87.9 5.83 7.92

Metamerism from the original?

These were obtained using BabelColor and the original mech's headache (Maddie's Lighthouse) as the reference. Here's a screen shot of that:

Finally, how do they relate to the numbers posted a couple hours ago?

Black Widow (Bermuda Beige/Auto Air Aluminum Fine 4:1)

185 185 185
0.313 0.329 48.8
75.3 -0.03 -0.03

Black Widow (Bare Beige/Auto Air Aluminum Fine 4:1)

189 190 190
0.312 0.328 51.4
76.9 -0.29 -0.35

So there's the base folks! Enjoy! Screen shots tomorrow after they cure some more.

Re: Further Investigations...

One more thing. I believe this thread is pretty much done. I'll post the pictures in the Black Widow discussion thread today. These investigations have come to a close! Watch for a new one to begin soon though! After a short break!
