Any off the shelf N8.5 paints identified yet?

I've been away from this forum for a while, however, i was wondering if anyone has identified any good off the shelf paints in the N8.5 shade range?

Also as a side note, anyone identified any good Benjamine Moore paints, be it in the N8, N8.5, or N9 range?

Thanks,
Harry

Talk to muzz! He has Chantilly Lace which is a N8 IIRC... Plus he prefers Benjamin Moore. Have you checked easyrgb.com?

Thanks. Chantilly Lace is actually a N9 or N9.5. But I'll check with muzz to see if he has any favorites that are darker.

Thanks,
Harry

BM Color Preview:
Between N8.5 than N9: Color
#2133-70 TUNDRA RGB = 223 224 223 (a=-.5, b=.4, T=6498K)
Slightly lighter than N9:
Color #2126-70 CHALK WHITE RGB = 231 233 231 (a=-1.0, b=.7, T=6493K)
BM Color Collection:
Slightly darker than N8.5: Color #
1611 RGB = 214 216 213 (a=-1.2, b=1.2, T=6448K)

Harry, the 1st two are neutrals. We like to have a,b within +/-1 and temp within 100pts of 6503K. If it meets all of those criteria, we consider it neutral.

I also provided a 3rd option that is a bit darker...but it strays a bit from the neutral criteria. The temp looks good, but both "a" and "b" fall just outside of the limits we typically use for neutrality. The fact of the matter is that when you go to have it made, the deviation from store-to-store will likely result in a paint that is extremely close to the numbers easyRGB lists, but it won't exactly match. So, if you went with the 3rd option...you may get lucky and end up a within the +/-1 limits...or you may end up a bit further away. With store-to-store variation, the exact paint you come home with is a bit of a shoot. Normally, I wouldn't even offer up the last option since it doesn't technically meet the criteria for neutrality, but since there are no other BM options below RGB=223, I wanted to mention it. I also feel good about it being very solidly within the neutral temperature criteria. If you want BM, and really want to pick one of their colors in the 8-8.5 range, then it's the best option. It's also closer to neutral than Chantilly Lace (that's been used with success by muzz):
RGB = 241 242 238 (a=-1.0, b=1.8, T=6381K)

I do want to mention that you may also consider doing a paint match of another neutral paint that's the shade you want, given the limited OTS options of BM colors.

EDIT: Fixed mistake.

Harry,

Call your Benjamin Moore dealer and see if they can color match one of the true and tested neutrals. If it's an Ace Hardware they can probably match something from EasyRGB. It makes no sense to lower yourself to a less quality paint!

You could always mix up a batch of Black Widow as well!

I was really hoping to make up some Black Widow, however, HE558 is not available at all in Canada ... so no go

Cynical2, would you mind telling me if the color 2132-70 Mineral Ice from Benjamin Moore (220, 222, 222 RGB values) meets the criteria?

Thanks,
Harry

Yep, actually it does. When I said there were no other BM colors that met the criteria, I was thinking that a 2 point difference in R&B were enough to drive it beyond +/-100 degrees. But, it's a 3 point difference that does that (unless the green is way out of whack). So.....there may be some others since when I was screening the BM colors. I'll edit my post above to avoid confusion for others...

So, the bottom line is that if you use easyRGB, and the difference is R&B is 2 points or less...then the temp will be OK. I haven't figured out any real pattern for a&b...so I have to use the calculator for those.

Anyway, the numbers for Mineral Ice are: Temp = 6580K and a,b=-.67, -.24

So, a&b look great...temp is getting closer than the others to being out, but is still within range. Temp shows it's a bit red deficient...but you already knew that from the RGB numbers.

Hey Guys,

Harry, I got your PM- Sorry for the late response.
I've been extremely busy these days.

I figured I would put it here in your thread.

I used Chantilly Lace for the BW I made up, I missed the Mineral Ice option until after I purchased it, as it is in a different collection...DOH!

I also bought BM 871- Pearl River, which is -2 point(on Red)+2(green) from True Value Winter Mist according to Easy RGB
218-222-220

The Pearl River is definitely a darker Paint than the Chantilly, I wanted to use a Lighter Base + use more Alu for the BW.

I didn't use the Pearl River by itself, just for a sample BW screen.

Gary
