My guess is that it must be the hdmi to dvi adapter.

Nope, I switched out the cable for another one. Problem still exists. The problem is definately in the TV itself, the question is what?...

It couldn't be as simple as the wrong input selected, could it?

Nope, though I did triple check tat at first, switching cables in and out like mad.

I know it's not the input because the popcorn hour plays fine, it's only the HD-DVD Player and the Upconverting DVD player that won't play over HDMI/DVI.

It must have something to do with resolution?

It's a 1080i CRT RearPro, both DVD and HD-DVD are set for 1080i output, hooked up over HDMI.

Looks like I need to listen to the podcast again
So, you can get video from the same hdmi input port but using a different source (I think it was the popcorn hour) was that set to 1080i? Is the TV deinterlacing on the fritz?

Does it work with the source(s) set to 720p, 480p or 480i?

My inkling is no, but I will verify that when I get home.

At this point, I'm going to throw out one more piece of info I've been holding back...the Alpha Dog HD-DVD doesn't work. But, I have an HD-DVD from Dolby, a promo DVD with various clips, and it works fine. This is not a hollywood release, but what appears to be a special order in house production.

So Alpha Dog doesn't work, but Dolby Test Disk does. What gives?

HDCP and the hdmi handshake? Is it a copy of Alpha?

Re: RHTI 35: Trouble Shooting, Joe Kane Designs $7k Projector, Jim & Aspect Ratios, "Rambo", The Wee

You've hit it. From the best of my deducing, the Tosh seems suddenly to be incapable of resolving an HDCP handshake. OF course, if HDCP never existed, none of this would be a problem. But now, I can't even watch my STANDARD DEF DVDs on my Oppo (no component outs on the Oppo either).

I'm trying to resolve it with Toshiba, but it's out of warranty. Guess I'll be ripping and stripping DRM from here on out (until I can afford that Joe Kane projector, atleast). Good thing I have the Popcorn Hour.

Stupid HDCP! More idiotic measures that in the long run make the honest users of this technology suffer.

I'm real happy that you stepped up the frequency of the podcasts. Will it continue?

Here's a question: If I make a backup of one of my discs (of course) shouldn't I be able to upconvert it using my blu-ray player through component cables? Is there a certain software that is required when making a copy?

-Greg (yeah, the same one that left the comments about the photos)

Re: RHTI 35: Trouble Shooting, Joe Kane Designs $7k Projector, Jim & Aspect Ratios, "Rambo", The Wee

I'm going to shoot for 1 every 1-2 weeks (closer to the 1 week side during the summer). In the summer, I have a little more free time (I work in Higher Ed and most of the classes are on break for the summer). Unfortunately, summer is also the time during which most people tune out (pretty standard for all media, including podcasts). But, my goal is to keep making them, and folks can download back episodes when the come back in the fall.

For your question, there are very few dvd players that will upconvert over component. This will be in the rant next episode. I don't believe you can output anything over 480p over components using standard DVD (even a "backed-up" copy), but you can get 1080p over components using Blu-ray (doesn't make sense does it?) I'll put it out there for someone to correct me if I'm wrong.

Ah, now I get it, that makes sense.

Yeah, I think Zenith (318, I think) had one but I think they issued a firmware to 'fix' that. There are still some around though. I just kept reading that if the DRM was stripped off it would upconvert. I think you are right in that the players just don't upconvert via component. Interestingly, I heard about this item on a different podcast - maybe you've seen it: HDFury. I'm looking into it since my PJ does not have an hdmi input.

Hmm...the HD Fury is a little pricey, but if it work, I'm certain it's worth it.

What can I say? I'm a cheapskate.

I share your frugal nature, but it is much cheaper than an external scaler if you don't have an hdmi port. I don't know if I would gain a whole lot but it is worth a look. I'll probably take that money and save it for a 1080p projector instead - looks like those prices keep on dropping.

I hear that. I figure I'm still about 2 years away from my projector purchase (waiting for my next move...out of the shared walls), so I can't wait to see what $3-5k will get me in 2 years. I'm hoping that Joe Kane projector, with an LED light source
