Re: Episode 21 - $99 the end of the War?, "The Contract", They Might Be Giants "Facto

I got an email today keeping me honest. I neglected to mention in my "End of the War " segment the mantra that I have uttered many times: Content Is King.

That being said, I think the number and quality of titles is pretty even amongst Blu-ray and HD-DVD, and any disparities will be lessening as times goes by, not growing wider. Anyone want to straighten me out?

Good show this week guys................
I will have to say if blu ray doesn't do something soon there in trouble.
With Christmas coming up and it looks like we may have so $99 to $150 deals going on with HD DVD players. Shoot if you count the 5 free HD DVDs there giving away with it, it's all most like getting one for free.
Why on Gods green earth anyone would go buy a 50 or 100 dollar standard sd DVD player when you can get and HD DVD player for deals like this is beond me.
I'm sure most consumers have at least a little common since. So come christmas time if Sony AKA blu ray doesnt act fast there in for a heap of trouble.........
Your right though there not going to go away they'll just loose the format war.......Again!
The up side is the war is getting closer to being over and it's looking mighty good for us consumers this holiday season.

I can see one reason why someone would still buy a $100 standard DVD player when faced with $199, $149, or even $99 HD-Disc: They don't know about the players, or they don't know the difference.

Like I noted in the show, the employees are doing a **** poor job informing their customers. That guy looking at the Blu-ray player would have walked out with an HD-DVD player if the blue shirt had done his job.

We need to fill in and spread the word, and I'm not just saying about HD-DVD, but HD-Disc in general. Keep in mind though, that plenty of our friends and relatives will be stocking up on $30 DVD players this Christmas, and for them HD won't matter. That's a fact that needs to be accepted.

They should just push them as upscaling DVD players- oh and which do the next gen (HD-DVD) as well.

Playing regular DVD movies on my A2 is so much better than my previous 'upscaling' DVD player.

Great episode as normal. I am curious to see attach rates with these HD DVD players though as I have a feeling many people bought them because they were a good deal (it was a sale after all) and don't really know what they are or how to use them properly.

Don't know that we'll ever get those numbers from a verified source, but I could be wrong. However, I would bet that a significant number of people, like me, didn't buy any movies, and just went home and switched their Netflix to HD-DVD.

Very good point. I have a PS3 and buy very few discs, only must haves IMO and use Netflix for the rest. The good thing is Netflix does report the percentage of users that have HD DVD or BD as their primary choice. Last time I think it was about 51/49 HD DVD. It will be interesting to see the changes.

It has to be a seriously good movie for me to buy a copy anymore. I have a couple that I can watch over and over again (Pulp Fiction, Boondock Saints) and a couple for testing out the system (Matrix, Fight Club), and that's about it.

I look at it this way. All these folks with 400-800, even 1000 movies in their collection...for the price of 1 DVD per month, I have a 10,000 DVD collection. I just let Netflix store it for me in one of there warehouses, and it takes a day for them to get it back to me.
