more than 12 filters possible?

Is there any way to increase the number of filters available? I'm experimenting with using REW to equalize my full-range speakers, and 12 filters isn't quite enough.

More generally, have others had success using REW with full range speaks? Sorry if that's a stupid question - I've been using drc until now and am completely new to this program. So far the results seem to be good, and the GUI makes a huge difference!

Welcome to the Forum, germanicus!

No, there is no way to add more filters to an equalizer than what it has, any more than it's possible to add additional loading drawers to your DVD player. If you need more you might try a 1/3-octave equalizer - they have about 30 filters per channel, but they are all at fixed frequencies and bandwidth, not parametric like the BFD (I assume that's what you're using?).

I'd suggest that you're probably over-equalizing, 'cause 12 parametric filters is quite a few even for full-range equalizing.

Regards,
Wayne

Sorry - I didn't ask my question very clearly. I mean in REW - when I open the EQ Filters table in REW, there are only 12 filters available. I was wondering if it's possible to increase that number.

I'm not using an equalizer - I'm using a PC based convolver (the Inguz plugin for slimserver). So I've been experimenting with using REW to produce a filter impulse response, which I then export as a WAV file and feed to Inguz. AFAIK there isn't any theoretical limit on how many filters it's possible to apply in the process of producing that impulse response.

You're probably right - I'm pretty new to this, and very much at the experimentation and learning stage.

Using the 12 filters, I can get the corrected curve flat to within +-3 dB from 24Hz-20kHz, which is decent. This weekend I'm going to take some measurements and see how close to reality that actually is. I'm also disobeying the rules and trying to correct for nulls - if I didn't do that, I'd have more filters available. I'm curious to see if it works. It probably won't.

Gotcha. You must be using the BFD 1124 setting. Under the "Equalizer" tab top left of screen) change the setting to "Generic," and you'll have 20 filters. That should do ya!

Not all dips in response are nulls - see here.

Wayne

Great - thanks! I hadn't noticed that.

I've just created a very nice full-range filter, throwing caution to the wind and using all 20 filters. It sounds pretty good, actually. The bass is much better. It's not so clear to me that the treble equalization had a definite positive effect, but I want to listen for a while longer before I decide anything.
