Can't calibrate my soundcards

Hello from a newbie,

I've downloaded the REW and installed the Java update.

I have two cards, a Delta 1010 and an Echo MiaMIDI, neither of which I can calibrate.

I've tried looping Left to Left, then Right to Right on both cards, ensured monitoring is off and adjusted levels so that out is same as in.

I have triple-checked my computer for default in/out of the audio for each test on each card.

However, no matter what settings I use on the cards, from minimum fader to maximum fader levels or anything in between, the "measure" dialogue box always tells me the reading is -71dB and that I need to readjust the cards. The graphs of the responses that are generated are just a few blocked lines on the right end, not a response curve.

So...after half a day of failure, I'm stuck and have no idea what to do next.

Any tips?

Oh, my computer is a Mac G4.

Regards,

Jet

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

pearldivers, I moved your post to the REW forum, as it's more suited here.

Can you tell us what operating system version you're using?

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

In 10.4 Java applications can only access the built-in audio inputs, regardless of what is set as the default input. In 10.5 inputs from USB soundcards can be selected, though it looks like Firewire cards cannot.

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

One of my prior posts was a little confusing on this issue. On 10.5, a firewire card can be selected as an output device. The name of the card in my case appears in the drop down list. On 10.4, it seems like the card can also be selected as an output device, but in my case the name was blank on the drop down list.

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

So, if in 10.4 only the inputs from the built in can be accessed, is there anyway to calibrate the MOTU 828 MK1? I have MAC G4 also and I was having the same problem.

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

You could calibrate a loop from the MOTU output to the built-in input.

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

John,

so, in fact, the software is unuseable on any Mac under 10.5....is that correct? I'm asking because it would be a nice "advisory" to post up at the download point, as it says "tested on 10.4" on the page.

Whilst the software allows me to "select" the inbuilt audio, I can't establish the necessary loop.

Cheers,

Jet

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

No, that's not correct, I had it working without problems on an Intel Mac Mini under 10.4 using the built-in audio, with the built-in devices set as the defaults under the Mac's sound preferences and REW set to use the default devices. Only needed 10.5 to access USB soundcard inputs.

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

Thanks for the response! Is that the only connection that I would have to make to calibrate the MOTU 828? Would it be better to use the main outs or Analog 1 - 2 outs? Should I connect the left or right output from the MOTU to the built in input? Also, I would have to connect the SPL meter to an "in" on the MOTU and then connect an out from the MOTU to the built in input on the MAC, right?

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

John,

I've tried using the in-built audio and ensured "default device" shows in the dialogue box, but the measure yields
-54dB and I'm prompted to do a card adjustment...same as when I try to measure my Delta 1010 and the Echo card, only they yield an ever lower dB.

I guess I'm just unlucky, REW simply won't run on my Mac.

Thanks anyway for your advice, appreciated!

Jet

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

Jet, did you set built-in audio as the default for playback and recording in the Mac's sound preferences? (before starting REW).

Re: Can't calibrate my soundcards

Yes, I did. I double-checked the Audio-MIDI selection in Utilities as well, and both it and the sound preferences from the Apple menu were ticked for "in-built audio/line in".

You can't. I suggest you try FuzzMeasure, there is a 10.4 version still available though the developer has moved on to 10.5 for the current version.
