REW Rookie

First post guys so be gentle. Trying to get my head round what REW does before I rush off and buy meter etc.

From what Ive read....you connect the SPL meter to your laptop (into the mic socket)...a second connection is made from the laptop (from one of the headphone sockets) to your AVR via the line in left and right sockets.

The REW programme sends test signals to the AVR which is then sent to the speakers, picked up by the SPL Meter and then sent back to the laptop and REW to be analysed?????

Other detailed questions:-

My laptop (Dell inspiron 1525) has one mic socket and two headphone sockets. Can these be used or do I need an external sound card?

My Onkyo sr 875 has an AUX 2 input beneath the front panel with Audio L & R sockets. Are these the line in sockets I use????

A mic input is unsuitable. You require a line input, since the output of an SPL meter is at line-level. Most people with laptops require an external USB soundcard.

Yeah, any AUX or CD, etc is a line input.
