Setting BFD problem

I'm having one moo baby moo of a problem setting up the input volume. The wizard keeps telling me that the level is too low. Can some one walk me through this?

Re: Setting BFD problem

Does your card appear in the input selector and do you have Line_IN selected?

When you press the red button shown at the top of the picture, does the REW SPL meter and VU meters respond when you talk into your Radio Shack SPL meter?

Yes, I selected my card and 'line-in'. The spl meter did not respond.

Re: Setting BFD problem

I just went through this, and I think my fundamental problem was that I needed to select "LEFT" in REW (next to the SPL readout in the upper left below the graph) even thought I was connected to the "red" RCA inputs on my adapters. (I always thought red = right and white = left.)

So, try playing with that.

I'll try that...

Check your cable from the SPL meter and be sure the "cable to jack adapter" is stereo?

I trust your SPL meter is OK?

The 'cable to jack' adapters are the same ones pictured in the parts needed. The meter seems to be OK...it takes readings....

Re: Setting BFD problem

Are you sure you are plugged into the LINE_IN plug on the soundcard?

Have you tried selecting Left and Right channel input in REW?

Were you able to do the soundcard calibration?

Re: Setting BFD problem

Make sure you have the mic plugged into the sound card’s “Line In” jack and not the “Mic” jack. Don’t ask how I know to mention that...

Wayne

Got it to work. When trying to set the input volume the sound mixer line-in recorder was not selected. All I need now is to get rid of the horrific hum that I have when the BFD is connected.

Re: Setting BFD problem

Welcome, fellow traveler ... http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...d-bfd-hum.html

FWIW, I've decided I'm going to call the cable company and see if they'll fix the problem. If not, I'm probably going to put a transformer in the cable TV path since I think that'll do the trick and avoid putting anything in the actual subwoofer signal path.

Re: Setting BFD problem

I am using a 'cheater' plug now and it stopped the hum when connected from the receiver to the BFD to the sub but when I hook the soundcard to the BFD to the sub I get a hum. Can I just hook the soundcard to the sub and then get measurements and then send filters to the BFD via MIDI? Looks like I have a ground loop created with my pc...this is crazy!

Re: Setting BFD problem

Yep, happened to me too.
You reconnected the ground loop you broke with the cheater plug on the BFD.

I'm using a laptop, so I simply unplugged the laptop and run off the battery when doing sweeps.

If you're using a desktop, then go and get another cheater plug.

The problem was twofold. With more testing, I found that a ground loop was created with the comcast cable coming from the outside. Also, when I connected to the PC and all PC devices via power strip (printer, monitor, and anything with three prongs connected to the PC) on another circuit it also created a ground loop....
