REW crashing on Intel Mac - why?

I'm a newbie here and am trying out REW for the first time. My problem is that it keeps crashing on my iMac. I get REW up and running, but every time I have it do an automatic measure, after measuring and graphing, the program freezes. I have to relaunch it. Oddly, while it freezes on my desktop, the Finder's "Force Quit" window doesn't even show it as running (but "not responding"), as it does with every other program I have seen freeze up.

So is it just that REW is buggy on the mac, and I should abandon it, or do I need to change my settings somehow?

FYI, I do have the most up-to-date java versions (v. 5.0) and the mandolane java plug-in. I'm running OS 10.4.8 on a new intel iMac. I'm using a microphone plugged straight into the audio-in port (not usb nor midi) and a usb dac for output.

Apple's Java Virtual Machine seems to crash easily when running REW, the crash is actually inside the Apple JRE so difficult to know what is provoking it. You might find some more useful info in this thread: http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...-book-pro.html
