Getting started HELP!

Ok so I got the dsp 1124p hooked up. I made the decision to do this thing manually as I see there are some issues with MIDI hook up. I really can't see this whole process taking less than 2 days to complete. Just to get my first filter adusted and tweaked took all about the entire morning along with the initial raw spl measurements. With all the options of bandwidth and gain I can see myself doing this forever and going
How do I know if my unit will work with REW? Or do I have this wrong? Cause now I'm at the point if I can't go that route... The Behringer Ultra Curve graphic equalizer is starting to look really nice.

Some suggestions would be great.
BTW what kind of cable would I need to hook up to the computer? (if this option still works.)

Dave

You may be a bit confused. REW is a program you run in your computer that sends sweep signals to your receiver and with the use of a microphone suggests filters to enter into your BFD. You manually enter the filters into your BFD. The only thing that "doesn't work" is the ability to transmit those suggested filters into the BFD through a midi port from REW. This filter entry step takes all of about a minute when done manually, so you're not missing much.

Here's a hookup diagram from the REW HELP FILES that you should read before carrying on..

Re: Getting started HELP!

What brucek said. Doing this manually can take forever; it’s a snap with REW, well worth the price of admission You should already have an SPL meter, so all you need is a soundcard and a few cables. (If you use a soundcard with RCA connections [like the Creative Soundblaster] you can dispense with the RCA-to-1/8” adapters shown in the picture.)

Even without the MIDI, the cool thing about REW is that you can manually play with filters in “real time” - boost or cut more or less, move the frequency center up or down, different bandwidths – and see right there on-screen the change the filter will make to your raw response. Once you’ve smoothed out your response, the program shows you exactly what values for each filter you’ll need to enter into the BFD. That kind of tweaking manually – don’t even want to think how much time it would take.

Regards,
Wayne

Re: Getting started HELP!

So I'll give this a go using a soundcard and REW. Went to look at Creative soundblaster... Which one do you get, there are so many. Can anyone tell me?

Thanks

Re: Getting started HELP!

Wow, checked almost every big box store and computer store in my city and couldn't find one external sound card of any type Is this usally a special order item? How much can I expect to pay for one of these? (provided I can find one)
Sorry for all the questions.

Dave.

Re: Getting started HELP!

From the “Getting Started” section of the REW Online Help Files:
Quote:
Examples of USB soundcards which have been found to work well are the Soundblaster MP3+, Soundblaster Live! 24-bit USB External and the M-Audio MobilePre-USB
I’m using the MP3+, which was pretty cheap – $30-40, if I remember. I’ve heard lately that some people have had problems finding them. I think the Shack Store has them - give Sonnie a shout.

Wayne
