SPL meter problems

I'm new to REQ. I have tried using three different microphones and two different sound cards (internal and USB), but the REQ SPL meter always shows 70+ DB with no signal. Calibration makes no difference.

Is there something wrong with my computer or am I doing something wrong?

I trust the connector into the line-in of the soundcard is stereo, with one channel of it being utilized for the microphone?

Your trust is misplaced.

I have now read the manual and discovered that hooking the microphone to the sound card's microphone input was not correct.
