Getting ready for REW?

Ok, Let me get this straight, I was going to buy a SMS-1, (ulness you suggest otherwise) and I would also like to try to use REW to take some measurements, what all would I need to get my laptop prepared for this task. Looks like a need a external sound card (which one?)
Looks like I can use the mic from the SMS-1, but I will need a preamp with phantom power like the Behringer XENYX 802 preamp or the AudioBuddy.
Would I get the same results with the RS meter or the Behringer ECM 8000 that comes with the SMS-1.
If I use the RS meter, I just need a Ext. sound card, right..
Am I somewhat on the right track here...?

I have a PB12-Plus/2 in a large room, and although it sounds awesome, I would really like to get a grasp on charting and tweaking...
I know this has been asked here probably plenty, but would appreciate your input.

Thanks

Warp

Re: Getting ready for REW?

While I understand that the SMS-1 works nicely, I might suggest getting the BFD 1124. It's very powerful, works seamlessly with REW and has a loyal following here.

For external soundcard, I believe the SB products work well. Yes, to use the ECM8000, you will need a preamp. You should get similar results as long as you use the appropriate correction file for the "mic" you are using -- be it the ECM8000 or the RS meter. The ECM8000 is flatter, and I would expect it to be more accurate overall (never used one), but the RS meter will work OK. If you use the RS meter, you only need the sound card (no preamp needed).

If you want to tweak, I'd suggest the BFD. I think of the SMS-1 as a do-it-for-you device. I know you can tweak it as well, but that's just how it is in my head. One benefit to the SMS-1 is that it has a remote control.

Re: Getting ready for REW?

So the DSP-1024P is what I should be looking for...?

I have also seen some people mention the FBQ2496, is one better then the other...although the 1024 is mentioned far more around here. What should I be looking to spend here on a BFD?

I did order a SMS-1 Which I will easily be able to sell for what I got in to it, but will be interested in working on getting a BFD to further enhance my expertise/knowledge bass for the future.

Thanks for your help otto...

Re: Getting ready for REW?

The 1124 and the 2496 are very similar. I think the official name is Behringer Feedback Destroyer Pro (BFD1124p). I think the 2496 has a little better specs, but it only has one preset to save your filters. More people have the 1124, so there's better "help" for it. It's what I have, and it works great. You should able to find one on eBay for about $70 used. I understand it's getting harder to find them new, but they go for around $100 when new.

If you have both the 1124 and the SMS-1, it would probably be interesting to do a head-to-head. I've read some threads that indicate they come out with similar results in the end. The SMS-1 is just more automated.

Good luck!

Re: Getting ready for REW?

And from some of the reading, the tweaking is a bit better.. or am I wrong..

Once I get all my stuff together, I'll do a head to head... Velo will be here at the end of next week, and I'll be keeping my eye open for those other pieces, BFD, preamp, and external SB.

Spring is here, so some outside work might start to take some priorities...

I have to download the manual and read up some too...
