Post BFD results....

I just had to post the results of my first attempt at defining filters for my BFD, and from my layman's POV, I am ecstatic with the results (with 5 filters applied, all cut, no boost)! Thank you all for your help and instruction! So, here it is (cue Bill Murray from "Space Jam" as he jogs onto the court)...

One more question at this point. I set the input level just shy of clipping using, among other DVDs, War of the Worlds (the "emergence" and "tripod crashes through building" scenes). This was before setting up the filters (in "bypass" mode). I found that the optimum AVR trim setting was -2dB, which was where it was before the BFD was introduced into the chain (Sonnie adjusted his by +3dB post BFD...?). After setting the filters, I found I had to bump the sub's gain to re-calibrate (leaving the trim alone). My question is whether the output meter will tell me if the incoming signal is clipping, so I can re-set the input levels appropriately. While WotW is an great example, there will be differences between movies. I generally set volume levels at the point just below when I start to lose audio definition, or start getting hearing strain. This may or may not have anything to do with the amount of bass. For example, in WotW, my preferred listening volume is determined by sequences like when Ray rounds the corner in his car, speeding home to meet his ex, or when the SUV is thrown from the pit to land on another car. I am just concerned that I will inadvertantly clip the BFD and not know it.

No, but you set it up before and so it would be fine. You're worrying for no reason. If it clips once in a while it isn't the worst thing in the world.

My understanding is if you have digital clipping you never need a indicator to tell you ;~)

Hi Vader,

I've thought of that same thing -- you can't see that you may be clipping the input because you're only able to watch the output (on the BFD meters). I've set my levels for all-out maximum, but I rarely listen at those levels from day to day. Of course, if you're worried about it during certain passages, and you're not "entertaining", you can hit whatever key sequence to see the input levels. Overall, I agree with brucek; a little input clipping isn't that big of a deal.
