Should I EQ??

I’ve been lurking on these forms for the last few weeks….the information here is great!

I’ve been taking measurements of my sub and adjusting its position.

Below is a graph of my measured response.

I let REW find peaks, and assign filters. I manually entered those into the dsp1024.
I re-measured, and once again let REW assign filters.

The corrected response is also shown.

My question……do I need an eq….it seems as if I’m just dropping the overall level??

Thanks for the input!

Re: Should I EQ??

What do you have your xover set to on the sub measurements?

Re: Should I EQ??

If you like the target that you are using, then you have successfully brought the level of the sub down to track it properly.

You had a large peak from 20hz to 60Hz which you removed. Many people might like to take advantage of that rather smooth peak to create a bit of a house curve - others might not. If you're a 'not', then you've done the correct thing.

Yup – what you’ve accomplished is dropping your sub level something like 20 dB. The equalizer should not be used as a level-adjusting device. I suggest lowering your sub’s volume control to where it’s close to the target level, then equalize.

You might want to consider experimenting with different locations, to see if it helps the 70 Hz / 90 Hz depressions. If it’s not in a corner, that’s usually a good starting place, if your installation allows.

Regards,
Wayne

Re: Should I EQ??

Thanks for the feedback!

to answer the questions...the crossover is set at 80Hz

I've been adjusting the placement of the sub, this location offered a response that seemed very smooth, except for the 70 and 90hz dip....I think i will adjust the position more, to remove those nulls, even at the sacrifice of adding some peaks....cause i already own a BFD to tame them down.

All these graphs.....i havn't even had a chance to do any listening.....music calls!

Once again, thanks, this site is great!

the crossover is set at 80hz...not sure of the slope thou.......once i get the sub looking good upto 80hz I'll start testing with my mains on .

I have the advantage of having the x-30 control unit from paradigm, 180deg varible phase and crossover

Re: Should I EQ??

If you have your sub xover control set to 80Hz, increase it to the max and remeasure. You may find that it follows the target curve more closely, and as Wayne suggested lower your sub output first, then EQ, it will need very little.
