Slight problem but probably nothing

Hi there,

When I installed the latest version of REW and run the program I got an error message saying that "no input mixer available". What does that mean ?

I hear sound on all material that I use but this error message is strange to me.

Please explain.

--Sincerely,

Re: Slight problem but probably nothing

Hi Ice10,

I'm not sure directly what it means, but I would start by checking that the appropriate sound card is selected in REW. I believe this is under Settings menu.

It means that REW can't find an audio input device. What operating system are you running? You can use the Generate Debug File button on the soundcard settings tab to generate a text file that may help work out what is going on.

Re: Slight problem but probably nothing

I'm currently using Windows Vista 32 bit. Funny that I get sound playing games and other programs but for some reason your program can't find audio input device. Is your program compatible with Window Vista ?

Thanks for responding btw.

Re: Slight problem but probably nothing

Yes, it runs fine under Vista - REW is a Java application. The error message relates to audio input, not audio output, so hearing sound from applications is not related. Do you have any audio inputs in your system? You need a line input to use REW.

Re: Slight problem but probably nothing

I think I was using the mic input instead of the line input. Oops.

Use the Generate Debug File button on the soundcard settings tab and post the file or its contents here to help work out what is going on.

You need to use line-in and line-out.

Is that what you're using?

What soundcard are you using?

Bruce I am using the onboard sound card that I got from my newly upgraded PC. It has line out, front out, sub out etc. Currently I have my headphones in the line out port.

Re: Slight problem but probably nothing

Another question. I was thinking of purchasing the Velo SMS-1 and I have heard great things from many people. What bothers me with this device is the resolution, apparently it's only 1/6 octave resolution.

I think your software can measure to within 1 hz which means that it's far more accurate, correct ? The thing with me is, the SMS-1 seems to be simple to use and it shows real time changes. If I get the beringer feedback pro, it means that it will be a far greater learning curve to achieve similar or better results. Am I right on this ?

Thank you Bruce.

Re: Slight problem but probably nothing

Does the resolution of the SMS-1 affect the EQ and the real time changes made (like speaker positioning etc ) or just the EQ ?

Because I really like the idea that I can see how the FR changed after moving the sub around or by changing furniture etc. Thoughts ?

Yeah, the SMS is quite simple, but the Behringer BFD is cheaper and I think it does a better job.

You are right, there is a bit more of a learning curve with the BFD, but that's what makes the hobby fun.

REW used with a BFD allows you to change something in the room or change a filter and then do a response check and overlay with another (up to 8) responses to compare.

Re: Slight problem but probably nothing

I've heard that SMS-1 can be used with your software. What would be the purpose behind that ?

What do you think of the sound card debug data ? Where am I going wrong ? Should I get a new sound card ?

REW would be used to observe the FR changes that are a result of using the SMS. REW is a very accurate and resolute tool that makes the SMS on-screen readout seem a bit primitive in comparison (IMO). Plus you can observe waterfall, impulse response, LF decay, Energy time, etc........... A BFD is under $100 and REW is free. Hard to beat that.....

No, if you have the input and output selected in the REW soundcard settings page and you're getting an error, I will leave the debug interpretation to JohnM - since he wrote the software....

I have an onboard RealTek audio device in my computer also and it's fine.
Here's my selections.....

Re: Slight problem but probably nothing

Is that the whole debug file? If so there are audio devices missing that would normally be present, there is usually a Speakers device for Realtek High Definition Audio for example, and the Java Sound Audio Engine should also appear. You mentioned the PC is newly upgraded, it doesn't look as if the soundcard drivers have installed correctly or perhaps they were installed after Java was installed and Java isn't seeing them properly? It would be worth reinstalling the soundcard drivers and reinstalling the Java Runtime Environment (the latest available is JRE 6.0 update 2).

Re: Slight problem but probably nothing

Is there a particular order when installing these programs ? Should I download the latest Java runtime program first ? I did download the latest sound card drivers so that shouldn't be the problem but I don't remember in what order I installed them (whether I installed Java first after installing the sound card drivers).

What do you think ?

Oops too late. I installed Java first. The problem persists. Will attempt to install a later driver if one exists.

Thanks.
