Now this isn't right...

I have come back to Rew after a fair few months bsense and I just know I am doing something wrong...

I am using Vista 32 Ultimate and an X-Fi Extreme Gamer sound card with a Radioshack SPL meter. I have the latest drivers and the correct cal file for my meter. Sub is SVS PB12 Ultra.

I have set levels and created a cal file for my sound card. After muh trial and error it seems only the 'What U hear' input under Recording in the Vista Sound control panel will allow you to create a cal file without all that horrid feedback.

When i measure I get the follwing graph which is obviously complete rubbish. I hope I am just doing smething stupid and you can help as i amtearing out what little hair i have left...

The red line is supposed to be my room measurement...

Re: Now this isn't right...

Ok, I see what is going on now... the 'What U Hear' input is not an external input at all so the SPL meter isn't even in use. Looks like the X-Fi is no good for this job then as all other inputs give a load of feedback and monitoring cannot be trurned off to the best of my knowledge...

Yeah, you've answered your own question. That's just the graph of an internal loopback in the card. The line is a perfect mirror image of the meter calibration as expected.

I can't imagine that you can't turn of monitoring.......

It looks like the software to configure the X-Fi isn't available for Vista... just great.

Re: Now this isn't right...

I don't have Vista but there is a slider for "what you hear", try setting it to zero.

Re: Now this isn't right...

I have XP on a dual boot and have found the 'turn monitor off' setting which is only available in 'Audio Creation Mode' or whatever it is. It looks like a mixing desk and is beyond me what everything does....

Anyway i managed to get some where with it but desoite setting all my levels at 75db on the Processors test tones when I try to measure the sub in Rew it is something like 30db quieter than the input... I need to fiddle more but not today, I have brain fry.

I don't remember it being this hard to setup last time i used it (previous version).

Re: Now this isn't right...

I tried to get SB Live to work with Vista....no go after 3 days. Best to find a friend with a laptop that has XP, that's what I did and
I had it up and running in 10 minutes.
