sound card calibration problems

Hello everybody

making soundcard calibration measurements, looped speaker o/p to line i/p,followed procedure(I think), but on the sound meter readings the o/p is giving a top reading of- 9.0 and a bottom reading of -12 but the line in top reading is -66 and bottom of -110 (fluctuating) ie. virtually no signal. What am I doing wrong.(The readings are the numbers at the top and bottom of vu meters)

Are you using a stereo cable and connectors for the loopback?

The concept is OK, but there's still a chance there for you to be using a mono cable. Is the 1/8" end a stereo jack? If you look at it, are there three silver segments (a tip, a ring, and a sleeve)? These will be separated by two black bands. Or are there only two silver segments (a tip and a sleeve, separated by one black band)?

If you have only two silver segments, then you have a mono plug, and that is likely your problem.

If the 1/8" connector is stereo, then that's fine. It's necessary for the 1/8" to be stereo because the soundcard jack is stereo and so the left and right channel must mate when the plug is pushed home. Select the right or left channel as the one to use in REW.

I guess you mean something like this?

Re: sound card calibration problems

hello brucek/otto

I`m using the cable eqivalent as in your getting started guide and joining them them with the phono to phono adapter, and the 1/8" has the the two black rings.

OK, that seems fine then.

Can you post a picture of the REW settings screen (and tell us the name and model of the soundcard)?

Here's a pic of mine to show you what I'm looking for.

Re: sound card calibration problems

Hello brucek,
will send picture when I work out how, however the view is just about like your settings but my card is fortissimo III 7.1.My input volume is 1.0 where I have been trying to adjust it, the only other difference is that you have the calibration file and mine at this point says none.other than that it is the same.

Re: sound card calibration problems

OK, are you sure (no offence) that you have the line-in correctly identified on the soundcard itself and it's connected to front out. It's so easy to plug into the wrong jack with so many available.

Do you have all the EQ and effects turned off in the Hercules software application. You also must be in stereo 2.0 mode with no small selected.

Re: sound card calibration problems

This thread is quite revealing. I think you should read it.

The member shows tab for tab how he solved the problems he was having with the same card as you have.

Give it try before thinking about replacing your card...

Greetings,

Bruce, I have the Realtek soundcard as well. I am using a Toshiba laptop and I identified the output I believe (marked with a headphone symbol) however the only input I see is apprears to be a Mic input. Perhaps I missed something?

Any help is appreciated.

Regards,

My computer isn't a laptop. Most laptops only have a microphone input, with no line-in. The microphone input is unsuitable. Most people that have laptops purchase an external USB soundcard to use REW. They're very inexpensive...
