Help w/Output

Hi,

First, thank you for your time.
Second, I am having a problem with hearing signal through my soundcard when working with REW. I am running Windows XP Pro. I have a RME Hammerfall HDSP 9652 card with 3 ADAT i/o and a S/PDIF i/o. I have tried designating my HDSP adat 1/2 as my output device as well as my HDSP SPDIF and neither works. I troubleshooted this all day and nothing. Funny thing is that the first 4 hrs I had just tried the SPDIF out and when I first selected ADAT and plugged in the cables, it worked! One time then never again. I don't see the signal in my soundcards mixer either. Everything works fine in Cubase, oh, but if its any help, I also don't see/hear any signal through my soundcard when playing through Windows Media Player. Please let me know if you would like more information. Thanks for your time,

Oh yeah, when I click the "Measure" button on the Calibration section, Everything works.

Re: Help w/Output

Only use the analog output with REW. The digital output isn't correct since you aren't able to loop it back to the input and create a soundcard.cal file (which you'll need to do). The soundcard calibration routine creates a file that is the inverse of the soundcards poor response and is applied to the measured responses to make them accurate.

Anyway, can you post a jpg of the REW soundcard mixer, so we can see what you have selected?

It will look like this............

Re: Help w/Output

Hey Bruce,

Thanks for the response. I don't have an analog out option on my sound card necessarily. But, through my Yamaha DM1000 mixer I am able to loop it digitally. And this part I have already done. I am able to get the sine wave signal from the Calibration>Measure button in Room EQ Wiz, to and through my HDSP 9652 card, to the DM1000, then back to the sound card, and into the input of the program. Everything works as supposed to. However, when I click Check Levels, I see the Output meter working as if its sending the pink noise, but I don't see it in my soundcard's mixer, nor does it get to the DM1000 (and of course not to the speakers). And the funny thing is that when I FIRST switched to ADAT output for the first time, it worked and I heard it. Never again after that. Restarted the program, my computer and all.

As far as the .jpg, I don't quite know how. Can I do this in windows? I could attach a Debug file... Thanks again for your help,

Ross

Re: Help w/Output

Yeah, as long as you can get a completed loop for the soundcard test, and it works, then that should be fine. But if you are using digital in and out of REW, how do you propose to feed REW a microphone/SPL meter? Microphones are analog, and require a preamp or line amp. How would you compensate for the response of either of these without including them in the soundcard calibration loop if you intend to use only digital.

I just wanted to se your mixer to see what you had selected as the input/ output devices (as shown in my jpg example). Does REW recognize the card as you see mine does, and then give you options such as line in etc?

If you can't get REW to recognize the card, sometimes you can simply set the levels using the cards own mixer controls or windows mixer controls. But if your not getting any sound out, it's a show stopper until that's fixed.

Can you simply start the REW Signal Generator and select Sine Wave and get a signal out to your speakers. Perhaps play with the Windows Playback Mixer and be sure the correct source is selected (invoke the windows mixer by clicking on the speaker icon in your system tray).

Anyway, to post pictures, you can use any screen capture routine and then read this to post jpgs to the site.
A quick screen capture program is Windows Paint. Get something on your desktop screen and press the keyboard key PrtScr (upper right hand corner of your keyboard). This copies the windows desktop to the clipboard. Run Paint and select edit paste and Save the file after cropping in a jpg format....
