Pink noise or sweep?

Can room measurements be done with pink noise from an external source? My computer is at the opposite end of the house from the HT room. I tried to run an interconnect cable from the sound card to receiver in the HT room and had loud buzz (ground loop?). I'm using the emc8000 and the ub802 and I have enough mic cable to run the length. Tom

Re: Pink noise or sweep?

No, you really need to have the computer fairly close and use the internal sweep. I know it's a bit of a pain, but long cables just introduce noise as you've already seen.

Often people use laptops (with an external soundcard) for REW, as it's nicely portable....

Myself, I got an old K6-350MHz PC computer for REW duties. It's a bit painful, so I would recommend something a bit faster, but my point is that for almost zero dollars (and sometimes free), you can use any vintage computer to run REW.

I'm posting a specific problem in my own thread, but your comment is interesting. I have a better computer, but can't get things working.

Maybe you could do a sticky on how to put together something like you have.

I'm having trouble with w98 millenium and a soundblaster card. ( You've posted in my thread about it.) I tried a different card and had the same problem, so I figured maybe it's the OS. Maybe w98 would work better than Millenium.

I tried with XP on a 2.4 GHz machine, but can't get Java on the thing. If w98 on a 400 MHz machine will work, then I would love a few specifics so I can use one I already have.

I use XP with SP2 for REW. I believe Java requires that.... I always leave the Windows auto update on, so it's always the latest version.
