I am new to this forum. I have been reading up on many of the excellent subwoofer threads. Fantastic reading and great knowledge.
I have ordered a sub kit from PE. 18" Ultimax in sealed cabinet/spa1000amp. I will post pictures as I go along. This is my first build..........if you see anything going wrong....let me know.
My question here is, what would you fellas use as dampening for cabinet? Polyfill? Sonic Barrier? I would really like to try the 1" Sonic Barrier......would this do adequately in the knock-down cabinet?
Any info or ideas would be awesome....thanks.
Trying to upload a couple of photos............I cant upload more than 1 photo....am I doing something wtong?
Got the sub installed.......I extended the wires to make install easier.........now I just need a 5 amp fuse and I am ready for a test.........fingers crossed!
JESUS CHRIST!!!...........I just hooked up the sub......set the gain in the middle........watched some scenes from Sky Captain....OUCH!......absolute pantflappin' bass!...........oh my god.........I will need to calibrate a bit though.
FANTASTIC!
My little HT is completely overloaded with bass.
I will listen to some music after I have recalibrated............friggin' AWESOME!
I just watched ESB with the kids..........fantastic! During the battle on Hoth,.....two AT-AT' s topple over....man, that is good stuff........powerful, powerful bass! I am pretty happy!
I also listened to some music for a couple of hours.........no fluffy bass or anything...just cool and tight bass. i listen to alot of old school funk, acid-jazz, Soulive, Incognito....a bit of AC/DC too....excellent!
Now lets see if I can get even more performance out of my MartyCube........
Great looking sub ! Beware, the first time you crank it and hear any distortion, or bottoming, you may get bit by the bug. I started with a single sealed 15" Titanic (the kit with the same plate amp as yours) and stepped my way up to the pair of ported SI 18's you see below w/ iNuke6K (and MiniDSP, and RPi-based IR remote controlled sub volume, and...).
You have been warned! :neener:
PS I highly recommend using (sacrificing) some of the dynamic headroom afforded by your 18" cone and big xmax, to EQ (and house curve) down to a solid 20Hz response.
Even with just 'normal' calibration....I have bone-rattlin' bass.............in the whole house! I have not even really cranked it. It seems as if the woofer is just loafing along, even with extreme bass scenes.......I LIKE!
I don't doubt it. But sub-sonic (or close to it) is a whole new way of life. There's nothing better than the WHOMP of 20Hz explosion content rumbling through your couch and your body. It's just different than 40Hz. Doesn't your amp have a single PEQ? Just crank it down to 18Hz with low-Q and turn it up till it feels right (probably all +6dB). At least till you're set up with real equipment (MiniDSP and a nice mic).
And go ahead and start planning for the 2cd one :TT.
KevinG......if you are really desperate......build a MartyCube on your own. All the drawings and measurements are here on the forum. Get some wood cut......cut out some big holes.......glue/nail together....paint...install amp and sub-driver.....WAM...your good to go BOOM!
I gotta say I happy with the performance of my Ulti-sub......oodles of power.....I watch big bass scenes over and over again.........hehehe.......cool!
Awesome! Be sure to post your progress. With pics and stuff.
There must be A LOT of guys building subs in the US.......!! PE is out of stock often! Golly....even I have contracted the bass-bug now. GREAT!
Guess who just placed an order with PE for 2 18" ultimax bundles..they are going to driver whenever it comes in, the rest now..I think I just peed a bit
