Latest sweep with Mains from 10hz to 200hz. Measured with 80hz crossover and 1/3 smoothing.

Re: RL-P 15 Project (PICS)

Superb response trace and a really nice project!

Good point about the Art Clean Box too.

There is around 6dB lower output from a domestic preamp compared with a pro power amp's input needs.

I used my active crossover to do the same job by increasing the gain by +6dB for the sub channels.

The speaker channels were left flat (0dB) since they are driven by a domestic stereo power amp.

Can the BFD be used to increase overall gain to feed a pro power amp from domestic AV kit?

I thought the BFD balanced itself out at neutral gain regardless of the filter settings?

That's funny Geoff, I was thinking the same thing when I saw the sub and iguana in the same pic... Hope he likes bass...

Jerm, question about the Art cleanbox... I'm assuming you have it between the Onkyo and the Behringer.. Were you just using RCA to 1/4" connects before?

The reason I ask is I've picked up a BFD to throw between my old Onkyo (TX-SR504) and Audio Source AMP, which means I'll be going from unbalanced, to balanced, back to unbalanced again... Am I just asking for a bit of trouble, or?

I'll check the rest of the forums to see if I see more info on the ART, as it's not something I had thought about previously.

*edit* --- Thinking and reading a bit more, I should be able to deal with this by playing with the BFD's gain. Still, this little box would have been nice back when I was using an old Carver rack mount amp directly from by receiver to my sub converting RCA to XLR... It just never put out like similarly rated consumer level Carver amps I demo'd using native unbalanced connections.

Anyway, killer looking sub. Can't wait to work on my next one...
I dont know what happened but after I installed the BFD I no longer need the clean box. I can now get a good signal without it. It might be just because now I have the LED signal lights assuring a full signal and never realy needed the cleanbox in the first place. I think the reason I thought The cleanbox was so great was because I could run the sub much hotter with it, But when It was at the same level as the rest of the speakers it made no difference. Since the BFD at maximum level (when using the -10dBV switch setting) puts out 1.26volts I know Im good since my amp has a sensitivity of 1.15volts.

Re: RL-P 15 Project (PICS)

Yes, the BFD seems to take care of the gain issues and takes care of any need for a cleanbox...

The first step I did was match the gain from my AV Receiver to the BFD going through the BFD guide and all is well. No clipping, and plenty of juice to the amp. I'm definitely not line-level impaired now...

Back on track, that's still a nice sub... Can't wait 'til I can sneak something bigger than 6cf past the wife... Someday..

Re: RL-P 15 Project (PICS)

Thought Id ad a small update since I upgraded my receiver to the new Onkyo TX-SR705. I ended up getting rid of my BFD since after running the auto setup on the receiver (Audyssey MultEQ XT) I ended up getting outstanding results. Heres a graph showing the sub before and after.

Im pretty happy with my frequency response.

Re: RL-P 15 Project (PICS)

Awesome, dude! This is what I had in mind to do, but I think I'll make two...

Did you notice much difference with and without the padding? What do you 'experts' say about not flaring the port?
Also, the box is pretty narrow, and as wide as it is deep. Is that a problem? Would it be better to go with a slightly bigger footprint and lower box?

Re: RL-P 15 Project (PICS)

Just finished Painting my sub again with some Rustoleum Stone spray paint. Check it out, I think it turned out great. It realy looks perfect even though the first picture makes it look worse then it does in real life. I also made and installed a flair to the bottom of the port but I forgot to take pictures of it.

Re: RL-P 15 Project (PICS)

You mentioned that after you got the 705 you no longer needed the BFD. I have the 805, the RLP-15 you have, and an EP2500. Would you recommend getting a BFD or just let the 805 do the EQing?
Thanks

Re: RL-P 15 Project (PICS)

Well it all depends what you want the EQ to do. If you just want a flat frequency response I would say just use Audyssey, But if you would like to set up a house curve a BFD is still a great tool for that.

Can't Audyssey do house curves as well as flat?

Not on my Onkyo 705 unless I get creative with my crossovers and my sub trim. On other receivers there might be an option for an Audyssey house curve, but I dont know. Im pretty happy with a flat sub response though.

Re: RL-P 15 Project (PICS)

I agree. With a flat curve that goes all the way down, it feels fast and agile. With a heavier bottom it feels a little bloated and soggy.

Re: RL-P 15 Project (PICS)

Looks great, I would have been tempted with that much box to make a coffee table. Although, cups would probably bounce off of it!
Did you spray clear acrylic on that when it was finished? Those special paints can peel off if not protected by a clear acrylic coat. Also, 3 or more coats makes a really hard coating.

I'm still trying to figure out this whole Art clean box, it's cheap enough from what I have seen, but I wonder if I should have one.

Re: RL-P 15 Project (PICS)

No, I never did put any clear coat over the paint. I dont realy feel its needed in my room since it never gets toutched, banged or scratched. I could see it being useful in a higher risk room with kids and pets running around though.

About the cups jumping off it if it were a coffee table you would be surprised. There is realy no moving going on at all. I have placed a dime hanging half way off the top edge and started pumping out some heavy bass and the coin never even moved.

About the clean box All I can say is I have found that there is no need for one with Onkyo receivers and I have tried them out twice. A good way to realy see if one is needed is to try a Behringer Feedback Destroyer (BFD) and look at the signal leds and see if you can get it in to the red with it set to the -10dBV setting. If you can you will know that your receiver can at least put out 1.26volts which should be enuff for most amps. With my Onkyo I could even hit the red led with it set to the +4 dbu setting.
