DIY Stage Subwoofer?

I don’t have the new house completed, so work on the theater room is a few months off, but I’m still plotting, and planning…

I’ve been thinking of building a subwoofer into the front stage, and using two RL-P12’s facing into the room. The stage would be about 3’ x 16’ x 14”

Another thought was to cantilever the front part of the stage a few inches off the floor and far enough out to place two down-firing RL-P15’s.

Since I’m not too swift when it comes to understanding driver specs., Is there an optimal box volume I should shoot for behind the drivers?

Does the down firing shelf design make any sense? It would allow me to use larger drivers without raising the stage, but does it create other problems or performance issues?

Thanks for any help and advice.

Did you see this thread on a riser sub by one of our members?

Re: DIY Stage Subwoofer?

Thanks! I had seen it a while ago, but couldn't remember where. It looked like a great idea.

I see his room is larger than mine, so maybe I can get away with two drivers. My plans for a shallower/lower stage wouldn't allow for 15" drivers facing the room, so I'm hoping the down-firing placement in a "shelf" above the floor is an option. If not, I may need to raise the stage or use RL-P12's.

Joe, all you should need to see is this thread detailing another Joe's sub build. I love what he did here, and it sounds like you're looking for something pretty similar.

Owen,
Just finished reading the thread, and you're right - It's almost exactly the way I'd like to do my stage, and Joe's done all the hard work and research for me (aren't these forums great? ). When I get done, I'll owe him (and you and Steve and the other contributors to that thread) a big thanks.
