RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

So I happened to be the lucky winner of the pair of SoundSplinter RL-p15 drivers, courtesy of Mike from SoundSplinter and Sonnie from our 'Shack. But I'd entered the contest before building my current subwoofers under the assumption I might win them and then make use of them. Since I ended up building my own before the contest ended, I don't have a need for them anymore.

I've discussed a couple of possibilities with Sonnie about what to do about this. My first plan involved me making some money off of this, so don't paint me a saint. But for various reasons, that one isn't a good option.

Instead, now it's your chance to win a pair of RL-p15 drivers by telling me why I should give them to you. Give it your best shot. Be warned that I won't believe any claims that these drivers will save the children of Darfur or that this is what your three-year-old daughter asked of Santa.

Post your story in reply to this thread. I'll pick a winner on Monday of next week.

The only requirement is that the winner agrees to write an exclusive review of the product for Home Theater Shack.

Contest is open to staff/moderators. I don't know any of you personally so there couldn't be any sort of shenanigans involved.

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

let's go for a really lame reason then, if they get sent to Australia (I'll even pay the shipping) then 1) I can spread the word over this side of the ditch about how good they are..2) I can put them in an LLT and spread the word about how good they are 3) I can then say I 'won' them from Home Theatre Shack and spread the word about how good they are and finally 4) if you fell for all this then I'll definately spread the word about how good YOU are!!!

Good man, keep up the good and noble work you saint from another dimension you!(done in my best porky pig accent)

lots of love

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

no!!

I was only joking, I really want them aaarrgghhh

Currently we are in the middle of the worst drought for over a hundred years. After reading about the capabilities of these subs, I strongly suspect that utilized correctly in a proper alignment, the extreme low frequency rumblings could very well cause an warp in the atmospheric alignment over the eastern seaboard, bringing about localized high and low pressure regions, leading to an instablity in the space fabric, the woof(er) and warp of the nether regions leading to the relief of the current misery of millions!!, and you could be the instrument that brings that about!!!

We, the both of us, need to rise above our own selfish motives and GIVE to the rest of society.

Oh, and after I save the farmers, I'll haul them back inside and crank up the Nine Inch Nails!!

lol

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

Greetings Joshua,
here is my "convincing plea"

I have built one DIY sub with a Blueprint designs BP-1503 driver, a large ported box, it performed very well until I damaged the voicecoil/former assy, so I replaced the driver with a D4 ohm 15 inch RL-p wired in series to present my Adire ADA 1200 amp with an 8 ohm load., I liked the build quality of the driver so much that I ordered a second matching one in anticipation of building a new enclosure that would house two 15 inch RL-p's. The material for the enclosure has been cut, and assembly had started last May for the new dual D4 sealed beast, which would be wired to present a total of 4 ohms to the ADA 1200 (and make it an honest 1200 watt plate amp again). For unknown reasons, the project has stalled, and I sit with a need and desire to get building again.
I honestly feel that if I was offered the two new RL-p's, that it would be a sufficient kick-in-the-pants to finish my first enclosure and start on a second matching one. I'm not sure if the home I'm in is going to be permananent yet, so I haven't undertook a infinite baffle installation, but I'm half way there and 2 more would bring me all the way...

Please consider me a a caring and responsible parent who would foster the two additional RL-p's as though they truly were my very own. (as an adopted child, I can fully realize the benefit of bringing new "children" into my home and letting them integrate with the existing "children", It would be character building for everone...).

Ben.

Thanks.

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

Wow, I can't believe you're doing this! Right on!

Now, why should I get the RL-p's? When I started visiting DIY forums about a year ago, I decided that a DIY subwoofer would be my graduation present to myself. Well, I finished my Master's thesis and graduated in May, and got a job, but my wife still hasn't approved my subwoofer budget. Not that I can really blame her - it costs money to pay for a house and two kids. But that doesn't solve my subwoofer problem! Our current "subwoofer" is a Radio Shack special, with an F3 somewhere around 50 Hz. If I had these RL-p's, though, I could finally have some serious bass for our home theater. To top it all off, my wife has said she would prefer an IB. Cha-ching!

However, I fear that if I cannot get these, I may be forced to build something cheap and unsatisfying. Maybe a 12" with a plate amp - I could do that for a few hundred, right? I would much rather spend that money on a good amp to power two killer SoundSplinter drivers, but I am getting desparate. Please, save me from mediocre bass!

As for posting an exclusive review for the Shack, I have no problem with that. This seems to be the only forum where I can post and be guaranteed not to get a don't-waste-my-time kind of response. I love this place!

P.S. Did I mention that I have two kids under two years old? If I don't have a project to work on, I'm going to go crazy.

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

You can never put too much bass into your home theater....

Think about that for a moment...

What does it mean?

Am I saying, that more bass is better, that these 2 awesome drivers belong in MY Home theater?

Or am I saying that putting 2 in is too much, and that only ONE of these drivers belongs in my home theater? (allowing your generosity to be split 2 ways!)

Too bad I'm a mod here (stupid durn-flurbin rules) , you could have actually heard them in their new home (I live in San Carlos). I'm sure I could have waxed poetic about how I am the most deserving creature and that puppies would die if you didn't give them to me.

But, I am a Mod and therefore applaud you for taking the alturistic road. Definitely deserve a few kharma chips for your generosity.

These are Josuah rules, not Shack rules.... he hasn't said no staff. If you have a strong enough reason why he should give them to you, he might just pick yours... who knows...

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

Hi Josuah,

I can't believe that you want to give these away, that's awesome. I live in Alaska and during the winter my family and friends watch alot of movies and play video games. If you gave the driver's to me, I would make a sonotube sub for me and then make a ported box sub for a friend/co-worker. We both have teenage son's and play xbox/watch movies all the time. I built the Natalie P's (HTGuide) and GR-Research surrounds for my friend and he loves them. I currently don't have a sub soooo.... it would be a great addition to the home theater room I am building (currently bare studs). I currently have the Dennis Murphy version of the TMWW (HTGuide Forum) and diy center channel as well. I would be willing to fully document and photograph my progress on both subs and post it only on this forum.

I've seen other people say that they are short on funds. Who isn't short on funds? That's one of the reasons I got into DIY audio because I couldn't find something that sounded good and that I could afford. I love bass but everything seemed expensive: decent driver, amp, EQ and misc parts. If you don't choose me, I'll be forced to use a cheap driver with disaterous results.

Even if you don't choose me, I think it's really cool that you are doing this.

Take care and Merry Christmas.

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

what fun!!! I just won the Buttkicker givaway that comes with 2 buttkicker LFE's. If you give them to me...I will keep one buttkicker, and one of the rl-p15's and give away (in a similar contest) one of the rl-p 15's and one buttkicker LFE. That would give two people the best of both worlds!

I dont have a subwoofer and have been looking for a DIY for quite some time...various reasons have stopped me from pulling the trigger...this would erase any concerns i have!!!

Let me know if this would be possible. Not saying I would win your contest, but if this could be an option, PM me and I will send you my email address and we could figure the best way to do this. winner would pay shipping in the new contest as well and this offer is for the Buttkicker LFE only (no extras)

This is truly a noble cause - helping to alleviate the bass woes of some deserving enthusiast(s). Hopefully they'll turn them into a pair of LLTs

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

Funny Steve, I was just thinking: I don't really need them, I should let someone else win them. But if I were to be given another pair, I think I would go back to sealed subs. 4 drivers should be enough.

Of course, with two more of these, I could do a Sealed RL-P15 v LLT RL-P15 showdown. You'll all be invited over.

Really, I don't need these (and my wife would kill me!). Give them to one or two persons who does.

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

Josuah,

I do want to say that I have two TC-2000 subs in ported enclosures.
However, I would truly enjoy putting these subs through their paces in an IB configuration. My movie room is calling for it. The room only came with a wimpy 10" subwoofer. I replaced that with an LLT but it is one huge ugly box.

I told my wife that I could have put subs in the ceiling after building the monster box (and hauling it up two flights of stairs), and she said why didn't you do that? doh!

Plus, you'll also have a free place to stay if you ever visit Florida. ;-)

You are going to make someone's holidays brighter!

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

Right Here goes. I've been designing sub boxes for about a year now and my first project was for a 12in driver. It performs beautifully however I am suffering from a lack of sub in the viewing room (the 12in is in the 2ch setup). Lack of funds has presented the main problem to getting another sub for the viewing room. Anyways mate very nice of you to giveaway the two subs.

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

Wow Josuah this is quite noble of you. You are really a generous person.

If you would choose to pass these awesome subwoofers on to me I would definitely keep with the original theme of the Giveaway. Then use them to promote the Home Theater Shack site and the SoundSplinter threads. By asking questions about possible designs, then fully documenting the whole build process on the forums and sharing what I learn.

I have been putting together a new media room from scratch. It started with a bare concrete walls and no equipment a few short months ago. Now I have a completely furnished room to my wife’s liking with a 50” HDTV. The remodeling went a few G’s over budget and that ate away at the funds for new audio equipment. To try and hold me over for a while I purchased an Onkyo HTIB until we can afford something else. For the price it is a nice system, but the “free” subwoofer that comes with it is very weak anything below 40Hz is mostly distortion. I have been very disappointed with no “impact” while moving movies and have decided that the sub needs to be the first thing replaced in the HTIB.

For a while I was set on buying a new sub from SVS or HSU based on guidance on the AVS forums by the many fans. Then through references to BFD and REW about how to fix room effect on subs I found out about Home Theater Shack. I now own a BFD and I am trying to learn REW with my POS sub so I will be ready when I get a real sub hopefully soon. Then I started reading through all the DIY threads and realized that I would much I rather build a sub myself then be “limited” to the design of a commercial product and am able to stretch my budget further.

I am a major DIYer who has just about completely rebuilt my house from top to bottom over the last four year. Now I am ready to move on to more enjoyable projects and have the tools to do it. Building a sub will be the first of several speaker projects that I will like to share here. Please help to inspire me to build my own 5.2 speaker system.

I would love to build two subwoofers with RL-p15s to create a “huge” impact while watching movies and hopefully scaring the …. out of the wife. Please help me enjoy a real sub(s) very soon and impress my friends, neighbors and family enough that they want to build a sub with a SoundSplinter also.

p.s. If two LLT RL-p15 proves to be “much” for HT then I will start a second project to put the other RL-p15 in my car.

Re: RL-p15's Giveaway... Contest

Okay, I've got a killer proposition to you which will make MANY people happy.

Two friends of mine here in Finland are just about to start building their first sonosubs (LLTs). They would like to use Soundsplinter's woofers, but due shipping costs and extra 26.5% tax (!) we have to pay, they become pretty expensive. I don't self need these woofer, but I would continue your good thought and forward them to these fellas REALLY cheap, making me and these two guys REALLY happy.

When they have finished their sonosubs, they would be able to bring them to my GP measurement session in next spring. That way we could have good data and information about these sonosubs/LLTs. I think this is the only way to have comparable data on the much debated LLTs. That would interest and benefit a lot of people over here at HT Shack and at other forums too. When more people see how good these woofers really are, Mike over at SS will be a very happy camper. I could also post their contruction threads on Shack.

Those results would of course raise a lot of interest and bring lots of people to the HT Shack forum, and that would make Sonnie, John etc. VERY happy. And when the owners of the forum are happy, that means more good things for us members, for example in a way of giveaway contests, raffles etc.

So in the end EVERYONE would benefit. Can it get any better than this?

Yeah, the suspense is killin' me! I've checked this page about a thousand times within the past 36 hours. We await your decision, oh generous one. That is, unless you've regained your sanity and decided to keep them.

Let's see, maybe I can think of a way to incorporate another smiley into this message...

So there were a few close choices. But I have to pick one. The winner is JorgenMan!

For the curious, I felt closest to JorgenMan's post on a personal level. Not because of any similarities between his situation/life and mine, but just that his post had some extra quality in it that spoke to me. Couldn't explain it to you.

There were a few other posts that I also felt drawn towards.

JorgenMan has confirmed acceptance of the two SoundSplinter drivers. I'll leave it up to him and Mike at SoundSplinter to work out the rest of the details.
