Re: Going crazy with RL-s 15's

You guys must think I'm dumb, i know about my hearing and how sensitive it is, I am VERYcareful about it for say when i have my ipod on the volume knob ranges from 1-30 and while most kids my age are listening to it @ 25 I'm listening to it at around say 13 or 14, and Im not a SPL meter but with the standard ipod earbuds that volume is not much louder than a normal conversation and I am the exact same way with speakers and sub woofer. With me most of the time i have will have my system up maybe a little louder than if i was talking to you. Of all the things to worry about don't worry about my hearing i know that blasting stuff @ 100 + db is dumb. Well you probably ask why is it that i want all these loud SPL subwoofers? Well with me I like knowing that fact that I can scare people shitless and blown them away and i like knowing that I can terrify people with my system What i mean to say although I'll have all this stuff i will only be blasting it when I want to show off to friends and sometimes everyone wants to hear their favorite song as loud as a rock concert like me right? and so that's the only time ill be playing my set up beyond 90 db. To be absolutely truthful I'll only crank it maybe 3% of the time and the rest will probably never be loud enough so that dad has to yell over it, so don't worry about my hearing I don't want to have no hearing below 100 hz when i turn 20 and i know what not to do. And Also, I've always been kinda of half hearted about the MJ-18 as a sub so Im dropping them completely as subs and instead of weak subs I'll just use them as some strong woofers for my next speaker build over 4' tall. And yes i rushed into this like a was a thoughtless youth but I'm not so like you guys said I'm go go with quality like i know i should, and like you said about you car i want that stability and most of all being 15 i want the bragging rights . Anyway my dad works down at a condo village place building the condo worth 600K a piece and he knows alot of rich people down ther and he has a friend down there who is a fellow bass/audio freak like me but unlike me he's rich and he has 2 of these( http://www.definitivetech.com/reviews/BP7004ASrev.pdf ) in the front and 2 of their smaller cousins ( http://www.definitivetech.com/review...evu_SV_904.pdf) running the rear from what dad has told me. He probably has a few other projects going but from what Ive heard is enough to say that I have competition so back to the drawing board with me and I want to go ahead and plan on the best of the best like Fi audio 27mm xmax 18" or (if they ever make one) a 18" version of the Rl-s.. . and I've decided against just having something useful above 30Hz , so i want an infrasonic monster that never gives in no matter how hard you push it ( not saying Im going to push it 24/7)When it boils down to it with me i like cone space the more cone space i have to happier I am

PS and as far as budget I have around $500 right now and i can get 2400 watts rms @ 4 ohm for about $300 and if it's the best i don't mind waiting a few more months and saving up a little bit more for a infrasonic brute, and Crisbee needs to give me some credit here, he seems to think Im gonna just blow my eardrums out by time im 18 and im not Im gonna do this right with the calibration and headroom etc

Well, at least I didn't call him "a punk".
Chrisbee,

Steve used "punk" because it's in the kids own moniker title. Steve wasn't calling the kid "a punk".

I think it's time to end the discussion. Each person is responsible for their own actions and will pay the penalty if those actions are irresponsible or stupid. Besides, do you really believe his parents will allow him to play at unsafe levels. If they do, the kids hearing lose in on their hands and not ours.

Cheers

No one is saying you are dumb. It is just in most of our experiences that some teens do things that are irresponsible and injure themselves.

Also, please watch your language in this forum, we try to keep it clean.

Thanks

A TC 2000 15" svc or RLp-15 D2 sub would work nicely, and you wouldn't need a whole of a lot of power, as they are sensitive. It would run you a little more than $500 though. To stay under $500, I would probably use the Dayton Titanic 15".

Re: Going crazy with RL-s 15's

Hello all,
Second time poster. My first was just now in the SS forum "is anyone using the RLs 15? It is ironic that a really really really old person like my lame half deaf self is posting in this thread about the same drivers that Punk is interested in - but here I am. Punk, I may have missed it in the post as to why you want the s and not the p driver. I am thinking it is because it just has that "you talkin' to me?" attitude in the way it looks. I can dig it. I like that too. But I bought 2 of them because I thought they would be the most musical, lowest distortion drivers around & pack'n a huge wave.

One of these is going to gitrdone. But some people spend more than the cost of one of these drivers on parts of their systems that no one (and no science) has yet to prove makes any audible difference. I'm talking snake oil here, punk - lining up electrons and such. If you want 2 RLs 15's and can spend the $$, then do it. When/if you realize that 1 is all you ever needed, there will always be someone ready to take the other one off your hands and you can rent an even badder limo for the prom or whatever. Let's review: Why get two? Because you are a punkrockn' madman(boy). And because you can, dude. And because your dad said you can.

When/if you get them, have you considered what a take-no-prisoners driver like these would need as far as enclosures? That is where I'm at w/ them at this time. I don't know what the ultimate enclosure would be for them - just that it would be large.

Is your dad going to help you build the enclosures? With drivers of this vd, you will not have a chance to be as deaf as I am, unless you have very very good woodworking skills . These drivers need serious, stupidly stout enclosures. (Oops. Old guy's grammar not good either.) No offense, but logic would tend to predict that you don't posess the carpentry skills at 15 yrs, as it takes some time to acquire those skills.

Good luck! Beware! These things can/do/will destroy a house. Your parents homeowner's will not pay for the popped and cracked sheetrock, leaking windows.........or your eardurms.

Re: Going crazy with RL-s 15's

Group ... I've been building car stereo cabinets for over 25 years. Most of the guys wanting big systems are 30 and under. I have not met one in that time that wants quality bass and I've talked to hundreds. Nor has any salesman or installer. My son is just as bad as his crowning achievement is to set off car alarms with his.
These car boom boomers also have home stereo systems. Do you think they play Montavanti at 93dB?
When you get older, you get much wiser. I am that person and if you'll excuse me I want to get back to my disco.

Hey... I resemble that remark...

No doubt I've damaged my hearing over the years... and when I was 30 I wouldn't listen to anyone who told me I was ruining my hearing with my car stereo hitting 140db... it still does 130db now... 15 years later...

I checked my levels the other day just to see how loud I listened. I turned on WOTW and listened at my normal level setting of 80 on my prepro.... SPL meter hovered between 105-110db with peaks of 115db during the first machine blasting people.

I'm a glutton for punishment... have tinnitus... can't see out of one ear and blind out of the other...

If I'm reading you right punkrokr... you're gonna do this whether we encourage you or not, so maybe we can help you at least do it right...
