Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

Thanks Goodsound, Its a real pain to cut out though, lots of different angles.
I've been working on my second set of plans now, correcting all the things I did wrong last time, one of the main visual design aspects I missed last time is the look of the top port baffle, the top angles coming to the point are actually longer than the bottom two angles, meaning the shape of the box can't be a true square, or the front two upright peices of MDF would have to be slanted in somewhat to get the look, I think, lol, feel free to chime in here if I'm missing sometning on the design (I just did a 65 hour week so I'm pooped), also doing the port on the top and the driver on the bottom this time, I just feel the last design didn't perform 100%, I may be expecting too much though, and more bracing!!!!!!, Well off to work for me, Ill yell at you guys later.

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

No Problem! I just started some first-time woodworking over the last year and lets just say I won't be posting the results here (sigh). I've been really impressed with the posters in these forums for their design creativity and at the end of the project, the high level of finish. It gives me hope for the future!

Anyway, I'm afraid I don't have much good advice as to how to ensure projects come out square; especially on such a challenging shape as yours. One of the most difficult problems I've found has been the initial design and measurements. I'm ok with instructions and plans, but its a whole new level of expertise on the design element.

Just thinking about your design though, I don't think the top piece would necessarily be shaped differently than what I've seen in your pictures and your description below. For example, if you simply made a square, the end caps would have to be square; just as they would for a rectangle shape. However, your design seems to include a square bottom, but a polygon top. It seems logical the polygon top would necessarily have different lengths towards the top and low end of the end. That would also result in greater/lesser (depending on whether you measure inside or outside the corner) angles at the top than as compared with the bottom. This would result because the top piece not only has to accommodate the square shape of the rectangle/diamond, but also the change in height as measured from the bottom to top corner or even from a central midpoint.

But then, given my difficulty with design, perhaps I've missed the boat here too.

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

Ya, It's going to be a tough one to figure out, I think I'm going to do some small cardboard mock-ups to see what works first, as for design, I found the idea for this design by looking at buildings, this design came from a skyscraper in dallas, just look around you for inspiration, theres all kinds of interesting shapes out there! Good luck in your project, and if you need any design help I'de be happy to draw you something up if you have a general idea, just let me know! cheers

Yeah . . . . me too, I took my inspiration for one of MY subs from the statue of liberty! Don't laugh, it worked excellently except for one little flaw . . . . . every time it hit a 33 1/3 Hz note the raised arm started to wave and my fake flame holder lit my expensive drapes on fire!

Mongrel . . . . you're gonna be alright. You're one of the few guys on here that seem to have struck a good balance between woofing, wife-ing, and working.

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

Wow phil, thanx for the compliment, I acctually have a weekend off here, with the move into the new house, the new job, I have not stopped for, 26 days, so I hope no one minds if I sleep in come morning, ,
I did manage to do a cardboard mock up of my enclosure to illustrate what I was trying to say earlier, you can see in Model 1 pic the square bottom panel and the results on the top, a perfect diamond, in the model 2 pic, the bottom panel is a diamond shape also with un-even sides, (front to back) and it makes the top come out as the original drawing, but it also makes for a long front to back measurement, which is estimated to be 36 to 40 inches, I haven't had time to scale it yet, but I do like the look better, so I will prob do mod 2, If it isn't to wierd of a footprint. see yas.

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

My preference is Model 1 except the camera lens isn't accurate enough to provide an actual "eye" feel for the actual dimensional relationships. Either model however, will STILL be striking, and no one else has even come close to designing a box like yours.
Your new abode looks excellent, it says, "abide with me".

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

Ok guys, truth time here, how much difference can you actually tell between 14 htz and say 18-19 htz, I don't have the room to do a 20 sq ft enclosure, nor do I want to drag the beast around, (my last one was nearly 7 feet tall) I would like to knock off a foot or so on this new enclosure, but, I could not live with SUB par lows, (no pun intended) so what do the masses think on this one??

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

Go with with smaller box and higher tune. Leave the HUGE llt subs to those with a dedicated HT. I built a huge box to go in my family room and I loved it at first but as we had more and more company I got kind of sick of it being so overbearing. This sub is going to be so amazing for you I would not sweat tuning it just a few Hz higher.

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

I have run single frequencies through my sub from 5Hz through 80Hz. The 14Hz to 20Hz region has "LITTLE" audible sound differentiation that I can actually hear. If I stand and watch the cone movements and play the single frequencies at high volumes, I can discern the difference between frequencies if they are progressing up or down in succession. If you were to ask me to tell the difference between a 14Hz tone and an 18HZ tone played separately, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. If I play a 14Hz tone and a 30 Hz tone I can definitely hear the difference.
So . . . . make a smaller enclosure, tune it higher, save some space. That doesn't mean you won't be able to hear or feel 14Hz it ONLY means it won't be as loud.
