Heres some of the tools I'm lucky enough to have at my disposal and a Circle jig I'm making for the router. Also my 8" port, a Sakrete concrete form readily available from Home Depot.

We are a full service boat dealership/repair center also, we have 50-60 boats on our lot. I just head up the Canvas Awning and Marine welding departments.

Measure twice, cut once, just make sure your measurements are right which I messed up and had to replan my cuts, but it actually turned out better, had more wood left over, Mains are next!

Pre assembling to get my angles correct, I left the top long to make sure it came out right.

That could be something similar to the head shot we see for IB'ers.

I think this is going to be one of the most unique builds I will have ever witnessed.

Thanks Sonnie, I think it is going to come out well, as long as I get the compound angles correct on top we'll be flying.

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

Slow going today, Got the bottom piece and port ring, and an interier brace rough cut, as you can see I've reversed the driver and port, fitting the port on the angle on top was to problematic, I dont have the tools to pull it off, also my son Taylor helped me tonight, alltough in that pic he's just running my dewalt down!!

Heres the pics, I obbsesed over cutting these for days and just went for it last night, came out pretty good, will have to use alittle filler here and there but over all I'm real pleased with the results.

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

Hey guys, I know sharp edges and MDF don't go together so I guess I'll have to round the edges on the top of the cabinet, I don't think it will take away from the look to much, what is the general rule of thumb here? the very top of the top baffle is very sharp, so I was thinking 3/8 to 1/2 an inch. At this stage of the project if any one has any ideas or info I'de love to hear it, I plan to have it thumpin by Sunday evening.

A friend has drafted me to build his 4-10" sub enclosure for his car, so I will whip that up after this stage of my build, we're using fiber glass and material to do a unique angled design with an amp rack, Ill post pics on my site as I know we can't show any of that nasty car audio here!!
I cannot wait to hear the 18" SPEAK!!!!

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

What are you going to finish it with?

I think we used a 3/8" roundover bit on my cabinet and it looked really good to me. That small of an amount shouldn't take away from the overall look you are after.

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

I want to use a base coat clear / coat automotive paint, our marine mechanic is a paint wiz and is going to help me with the finish, I do have a 3/8 router bit so I'll try that!!

Re: Sound Splinter RL-p18 Giveaway build thread

You can start with 3/8" and if it needs more you can also increase it, but I imagine the 3/8" will get you where you wanna be without taking too much of the edge off.

But don't you think that down-firing will protect the driver from damage? What's to stop the family from playing that coin toss game you see at the fair?

I guess you could cover it with some sort of grill cloth. You might have to warn people not to lean on the top though.

Why don't you like the bottom mount method?

brucek

The height alone will keep people from leaning on it, lol, the stupid thing is going to top out at 7'6", the speaker bottom will be at aprox 5', I have a idea for a Sound Splinter logo speaker grill if I can pull it off, I have nothing against the down-firing method, I just have to see that speaker moving, and its such a beautiful speaker, it's a shame to hide it, I hope you all don't dis-own me if it dosent sound good I'll back up and punt!
