2 Soundsplinter 18" Sonotubed

I am contemplating selling my SVS PB12 Ultra/2. It just runs out of steam on music long before my Paradigm Monitor 11's do. I want more SPL!

I don't know where to start. Where can I buy 24" tubes? Can I use multiple 4" ports so I can buy prefab flared port tubes? What amp should I run for 2 18's? What do I do for external highpass and phase control? What eq to use? What do I do to brace the enclosure? I have no idea how to "model" the enclosure, can someone help?

Re: 2 Soundsplinter 18" Sonotubed

How much SPL are you lacking here? Or is it you want lower extension?

You can buy 24" tubes from your local concrete supplier. Look in the Yellow Pages. You can use multiple 4" ports, and software like WinISD will let you specify this, I think. Behringer amps are the cheapest for the watts, otherwise go higher to QSC or Crown or something. How many watts you need will depend on your design.

You probably don't need a high pass filter unless you intend to overdrive the sub. But if you do, I don't know any off-the-shelf gear that will let you set something below 20Hz. Phase can be taken care of either by a distance setting on your receiver, or an outboard processor; again something from Behringer would be cheapest. They also sell popular subwoofer parametric EQ units.

Sonotubes don't need any additional bracing other than the endcaps. You can do two layers of MDF for the endcaps if you want extra bracing.

Model the enclosure using WinISD or something similar. WinISD is free, some others are not.

Re: 2 Soundsplinter 18" Sonotubed

Mmmm....dual SS18's will be quite a step up from a PB12 Ultra/2. A BIG step up.

How big are you willing for these subs to be? Are you just wanting more potential output or extension or both?

Although you could use 4" ports I would recommend just using one 8" port. At that diameter you dont need to worry about flared ports unless you want that smooth, flashy look.

I want more SPL for music. Tuned to 16hz would be just fine. So what length would I need? What port length? Size doesn't matter. What wattage is needed for each?

My Paradigm Monitor 11 v.4's are powered 200w cont. via Harman Kardon Signature 1.5, if that matters...

Re: 2 Soundsplinter 18" Sonotubed

I remember you from years ago at AVS

If you want to stick to 24" diameter tube, 460 liters would be the most you could go without being too tall. Make the tube ~70" tall and use an 8" diameter port (use another piece of sonotube, it's cheap) that is 26" long. Use as much power as you feel comfortable paying for. You'll be in for a treat.

I'd do 30" but I don't know if I could get it thru the door. 70" isn't too tall, but 7' is max.

I remember you too.

Ideas for finish? Truck spray on bedliner okay?

Is 1000w too much if pushed hard?

How much space is needed from the cone front to the base plate?

What's a reasonable selling price for my sub, with a new, never used spare amp?

Re: 2 Soundsplinter 18" Sonotubed

If you can manage, I'd be looking more at ~2000 watts per sub. For the tube, I'd use a fabric sock or carpet, and for the endcaps, spray paint or a can of paint with a roller and brush work fine.

Sounds similar to my project except I am going big. I am not currently locked in to a tune or size yet but I already have 30" sono on the way, 12' of it to be precise. Feel free to check my thread. Inside I have some ideas for mine but link to other LLT thread as well.

Steve---I didn't think these could manage 2000 watts!? I thought running 1200w (Crown Ce4000) to each would be plenty!!! I have heard these are rated a bit low but WoW that's a lot of juice!

Re: 2 Soundsplinter 18" Sonotubed

2000 watts isn't even 3db louder than 1200 watts - and the potential for even pumping 2000 watts to a driver would be for brief, dynamic peaks.

Re: 2 Soundsplinter 18" Sonotubed

I was running two EP2500 on my four 15" Rlp's and never had any problems!!! just make sure you have a decent power outlet for the amp(s), I'm running two 12gauge wires today for my setup ( 20 amp each).

Good luck with the project!

Re: 2 Soundsplinter 18" Sonotubed

Thanks! Right now my receiver, tv, and amp will share a 20A circuit. I did think about running the 220 from the garage over for the amp because I heard that the CE4000 likes the higher voltage pumping through it. I decided that would be a lot more effort for little results though (I heard 200watts more). I am sure the setup as is will blow me away.

Re: 2 Soundsplinter 18" Sonotubed

If I can sell my SVS for a descent price I might build 2 LLT 18's, instead of building a sealed 18". I'll need some help modeling it though.

Does the sonotube need bracing? Would 1/4" thick spray-on truck bedliner work?

See if I can help out since I accidently crapped up the thread earlier. The sonotubes bracing comes from the end caps. No internat bracing is needed for either the tube or port. For the bedliner are you talking on the exterior or interior? For the Interior I think everyone just puts on a light coat as a paint. For the inside seems like most just line with foam. I was wondering about heavily deadining the inside as well even though I have not heard any issues with the tubes it just seems like it would need it?

I meant coating the exterior. Very durable finish. And it would dampen vibrations too.

What's the point of an internal port flare? I get the point of where it exits, but inside....?

Re: 2 Soundsplinter 18" Sonotubed

Just to smooth the transition of air flow into the port so there is no audible effects. From my reading the outer flare is the MUCH more important...the internal flaring is more anal. Everyone says there is no issue with port noise using a 8" port on these tubes but I will flare my good just to be sure

If I can sell my SVS for a good amount, I forsee 4- 18" Sonotubes powered by 2 Behringer 2500's.

I guess if you want a thorough internal cleansing or have a colonoscopy scheduled you could just turn the subs up a little and watch your insides fall out. Jesus dude 4 of those things ought to jiggle your eyes out of their sockets?!?!
