Dual RLp 15" drivers, and hello to the Shacksters

My first ported sub(s),will use RLp 15" drivers

I am looking at dual RLp 15" (dual 2Ohm version). To fully utilise those drivers I will build cabinets around 12cu. ft. (per driver). Plus a single 8" flared port per driver is adequate IMO,port noise should not be of any concern.

I will build two cabinets with a 12cu ft internal net volume, tuned to a highish 17Hz.Subsonic filter around 15Hz ,since in room response will be very solid down to the pipe organ lower limit (of 16Hz) this will meet my goals.

The subs will be stacked and stitting in the best spot in the room, next to dual sealed TC Sounds subs and dual JL's. Power Crown XTi 2000,again I have a XTi 4000 on hand but this is better used with dual sealed TC3000 15" .

I will post pics in the comming weeks, when work is less hectic and my routers start producing MDF magic dust.

Great forum you have here.

Re: Dual RLp 15" drivers, and hello to the Shacksters

First SS RLp driver on the way... I will be posting pictures of the build. I will be building dual 13cu ft cabinets. More like four as I will have two 18" from another company also,EBS.

Sunday it is HomeDepot time and MDF. I plan on using a total of 12 sheets(4x8') of 3/4" thick MDF,for the four cabinets.

You're building 4 subs? 2 are Sound Splinter. What are the other 2?

Edit: I see on another forum your also building subs with the Mach 5 Audio IXL-18. I just finished building a pair of them. I'm looking forward to hearing what your impressions are.

Re: Dual RLp 15" drivers, and hello to the Shacksters

Yes I will be building FOUR to SIX subwoofers,in pairs. All EBS...

I have recieved my first driver...it is a Mach 5 Audio IXL18.4 , awaiting the first RLp 15 this Friday of begining next week.

I am building at least one cabinet this SUnday.

I will pist pics of drivers, material and tools I use ...tonight. I have purchased 6-7 grand of power tools(as an excuse)for my DIY projects. I could have gone and purchased some of the large Epik and eD subs....not yet.The fun is in deciding on a design, testing in software and then building it yourself(cabinet part at least ).

Stay tuned

I will post a few of my pics from the DIY subs I built...to keep this thread on the busty side. In a few moments...at work now!

Excuse the quality and sometimes rotation!

Material for one of the EBS subs, will make a 13.4 cu ft net(after driver, port is factored). Lots of work, routing Sunday.

Here the first driver I recieved... ...RLp 15 on the way...

more later...

Guess what...

The 240lbs empty sealed cabinet(dual TC 3000 15"),1.5" thick walls all around ,braced ...tank made out of MDF.

Arthur, you're building 4 new 18's to go next to your existing dual TC3000's and JL's?? Wow, you've got the bug bad! Make sure you give us your impressions of all the subs in comparison. Not many people are lucky enough to have owned and used so many of these awesome subs at once!

By the way, how do you like your sealed TC3000's?

Listen, Ear. Glad you're here . . . . sit down and rest a while, blow the mdf out of your . . . . . hair.
If you hook all that "stuff" up and turn up the XTi's you're gonna cause a neighborhood brown out!
I'm curious too, after you've spent your money on those tools and all that audio equipment do you have any money left for food? Ques Que SE' Ma Man, eh? A little French Canadian thrown in there . . . . heh heh.

Re: Dual RLp 15" drivers, and hello to the Shacksters

First I am hyperventilating like a lottery winner about Sunday...I am building the first cabinet(of the lot of six!).

How do I like the TC3000 15" dual sealed(opposed drivers)...with my Crown XTi4000 a good deal thank you,it goes toe to toe with my dual JL Audio f113's ! Plus extension is better. Sound quality ...seriously even the naysayers who talk about the dark side of the TC3000 motor, outstanding. Before the drivers start to seriously move (over 1.1.5 inch excusrsion peak to peak estimate)the room shakes and my ears plead for mercy.

This will not be my last sealed,I will contact Audio Pulse again and buy dual LMS-5400(or what ever they call this brute)for a sealed, and again the same to go with PR's.

What I forgot to say is I have over THIRTY subs home(for some odd reason this infuriates some members,on all forums I post!),most are compact (Velo SPL1000,Paradigm Seismic 10/12,Sunfire ...).Nothing earth shattering, just competent small subs. And larger ones too.

I decided to build EBS subs as this config gets you great extension and massive output down deep. I know I can order the cabinets premade, from eD and co. But with all these tools (wait till I post the pics... )I have an excuse to use them..or put them to some use.

Tomorrow night I will prepare my tooling, and post some pics. The local HD gus where asking if I am opening a company and if I am a purchaser for a contractor! I said...no just gimme this Bosch 36V kit I need to drive some screws into MDF.Next thing...I have seven impact guns, eleven drills...saws...two table saws...

I'll post tomorrow, too spent today...a 16 hour day is long at work.

I like this forum as you have a good few bass heads who enjoy the hobby above all. On the Klip..sch forum, there is interest but too few people to exchange ideas about new designs and more advanced sub tech talk.Plus a company owned message board,is not the ideal place to discuss competing..and DIY products. For obvious reasons.

Re: Dual RLp 15" drivers, and hello to the Shacksters

All tracing done, final MDF usage...almost 3 sheets per sub. I am building four almost identical cabinets. The changes will be in the porting and driver cutout (to house,SDX15,IXL18.4,RLp 15 and eD 18" )...

Here for tonight some of the tools I have purchased for the EBS project...

Arthur, what's that driver next to the RLp-15? It makes the 15 look almost tiny in comparison... what a monster surround on the thing! I'm guessing it's the IXL 18.4, based on your post from a few days ago, but who knows, you've basically got the entire catalog of sub drivers lying around over there!

Re: Dual RLp 15" drivers, and hello to the Shacksters

IXL18.4 it is. The RL-p 15/18 are more massive, the magnet structure is larger on the RL-p 15/18 drivers.

I will post something in a few moments...

These are massive.

Hey, you're right, the motor structures are quite different. In the pic I was looking at originally I thought the IXL looked way more moo baby moo with it's huge surround, but the RL-p sure makes up for it with that back end.

I can't wait to hear your impressions of these.

Re: Dual RLp 15" drivers, and hello to the Shacksters

Quality wise the Sound Splinter drivers are worth the extra expense as the materials used should outlast less costly units.

I am waiting for the CSS SDX15 now...3-4 days before I have it. Building, building ...lots of boxes to do.For Sunday I have three routers ready with jigs set up for cutting the braces. Ten braces to cut(for two cabinets).

Re: Dual RLp 15" drivers, and hello to the Shacksters

Thank you,

The first brace was almost lost,as it is not to my spec. The Bosch Colt base failed(yes) and I ruined the cut a bit,had to correct. The enxt braces as you will see will be better.

Now...this came today ...

I added another cutting bit today...all Freud, the quality stuff...

I will show some more braces tomorrow night...

This weekend I hope to assemble the cabinet. Two weeks from now I should get the sound damping material to line the walls inside(yes the hole is large enough to fit all but a sumo wrestler so I can line the walls ).

Arthur, great job on the brace, I like that you're obsessive about the quality of internal parts nobody will ever see. There's just a certain mount of pride involved in knowing everything's nice and neat inside. I didn't use a router to cut the holes on my current sub, and it still bothers me a little that the holes aren't perfectly even, even though none of it is visible. Next time!

Edit: that SDX15 has a really cool looking basket.
